Sounds like you are looking for a grill that will last one to two years. Otherwise, go buy a Weber Q - it's small and portable for balconies/decks and assuming you are only cooking for 1-4 people. They need something to stand on, though (a table or the Weber Q stand).

I've seen these grills last 7+ years, and the larger Webers last up to 20. Only things you need to replace are grill grates and propane (unless you have nat. gas hookup). I believe the only downside to the Weber Qs is the fact they mostly have cast iron grates which require their own special treatment for cleaning...if you want the full life out of them.

Some of the bigger ones (300 series) can run a bit over $200 but the smaller ones seem to fit your price range nicely.

Searing the steak in a pan and then cooking it in the oven is one of the best ways to cook a steak. Someone also suggested the broiler for a similar effect to a gas grill. All I'm saying is that as far as flavor goes gas grilling doesn't actually offer anything special. It seems that your main interest is just the act of cooking outside and that's fine.

Steaks really shouldn't be cooked entirely on any type of grill. Toss it on a really hot grill, or really hot cast iron pan, or a broiler/salamander for a few seconds to sear the outside, then pop it in the oven for a minute or two (or five, if you have no taste and/or don't actually like red meat but pretend to around your friends).

I wouldn't necessarily say it doesn't add anything flavor-wise, it just doesn't add smokiness. A gas grill is still good for things where flavor comes out of caramelization of marinades/onions/etc. A gas grill can also be preferable if you're just cooking a dinner for one or two on a busy night, even with my charcoal chimney starter it's still a 20+ minute deal to have my charcoal ready to cook, if all I want to do is crank out a couple of chicken breasts and asparagus sometimes it's nice to just have the gas grill ready to go in 5. I also use the gas for things like beer brats where they're only hitting the grill surface to brown off a bit.

I do a ton of grilling on a Weber Q320 and love it. I picked it up on sale, with a free tank, etc etc. Otherwise it's out of your pricerange. So the next best thing is the Q100/120. It will easily fit what you need to cook for only a couple people, heats up very fast, and gets plenty hot due to the design (mine got up to about 700 while burning off the grates). Also, it's very small, portable, and likely would be easy enough to store if you end up somewhere that you can't use it.

And don't forget that dollop of butter to finish it off in the oven!

    Very good advice.

Since you can't have a charcoal.

Keep the grill clean, oil before you toss on your food. Enjoy =)

you don't even need to spend $200 tbh for an apartment grill I had the following and it was fine for like 3 years. nah it wasn't the best but w/e it was like $100 and lasted long enough that we didn't need to replace it with a nice one until we felt like it

Webers are great but you pay a little more for the name.
