I got it from the Humble Bundle it was in a few months ago. Figured it was mentioned in an indie game thread. It's got a dungeon layout like NES Legend of Zelda, and bombs work the same way to open secret rooms. It's a roguelike though, in that you start the game the same way every time, and the dungeons are randomly generated every time. You can unlock more bosses, characters, and items by doing certain things in the game though.

The storyline is a bit disturbing, but it's from the guy that made Super Meat Boy, so that's expected. You're Isaac, a boy whose mom attempted to kill him when approached by the voice of god and commanded to do so by it. He dives into his basement to evade her, and fights what appears to be aborted deformed fetuses, mutilated kids, flies, and blood-laser-shooting walking vaginas, attacking them with his tears. You can also make a deal with the devil (reduction of maximum health) for powerups, or buy items from shops. Powerups are fairly disturbing too, including your mom's underwear, lipstick, and menstrual pad (makes enemies run away from you), as well as a coat hanger through your head, a belt, the heads of your dead pets, pills, and tarot cards.

Could just make a thread for indie titles in general?

I love these games but rarely do they generate enough interest to warrant a thread...

The controls were awkward, maybe worth playing with two analog sticks.

    Uhh..okay?

What do they call these kind of games anyway? Its an intriguing genre especially now that they make them with proper graphix. I think Dungeons of Dredmor was pretty cool, also Desktop Dungeons (free!). Also Dwarf Fortress but that game is just painful to look at.

This game is pretty fun, albeit insanely gay at times. I hate when the game decides to give you a bunch of fast zombies in a room with dead ends and shit and you wind up dying and losing all your progress. Some items tend to be useless as shit also or just really bad. For a dollar though I can't really complain, the game is still really good.

It's 2.50, was there a sale I missed? Steam sale ends tomorrow right? Coming up is the mega saving of everything we've had so far right?

I think I'm going to beat the game this time

Followed by: (end room if you don't want to see it....it's not really spoiling anything but I don't want to cause a dust storm in someone's vagina.)
    Spoiler: show

First time I beat mom was with eve. First time I beat Mom++ was with Cain.

Took 19 hours according to steam to get through the 8 levels X.x

Yeah. There was a sale where the game was a dollarish, it was a few days ago. It's not on the mega sale for today though.

I really wish they'd add a description of what the item does in your collection after you grab it/use it. Kind of gay to use a wiki every time you get a new card and can't be bothered to memorize all 24 of them.

It's a roguelike with shooting elements.

There is something about the way this game makes use of Flash that guarantee's a slideshow on my PC whenever there are more than 2 monsters onscreen at once for some reason, even at lowest resolution/setting.

Controls are pretty much what you expect coming from Super Meat Boy. The trick is learning that your character momentum affects your shots, so you can shoot somewhat diagonally when running perpendicular to your shot direction. It can also increase/decrease the range/speed of your shots when running parallel to your shot direction. That makes some stationary monsters easier to hit while staying out of their attack path.

It controls like Robotron 2040, but with only 4 shot directions (except with Mom's Knife, which gives you 8). 2 D-Pads or 1 and a set of 4 face buttons works well.

As for the slideshow, I had to install 64-bit Java and Flash manually to make a few of the HIB games work well. Now I'm running it at highest resolution without trouble. What sort of hardware are you on? I'm on x64 Win7 Pro w/ 8 GB RAM and a 6-core Phenom II. Usually I have about 5 programs open on my other monitor when I'm running a Steam game. Besides the occasional hiccup with the game, maybe once an hour, I don't have trouble.

NPCs can shoot diagonally but you can't. I'll never understand this mechanic.

Only some can. Those walking twats can only shoot in 4 directions. It's meant to make it challenging. After a couple dozen attempts at the game I can now fairly consistently beat it. My tenth time beating the game I had 40 deaths on record. Now I'm just trying to get to 100 deaths to unlock an item you get by doing so.

I had the same problem. Not exactly with 2 monsters, but sometimes they'd drop 10 monsters and my PC would slow down for a second or two.

you can shoot diagonally as well. If you are running South and shoot east, you will shoot south east at about a 30 degree angle from straight east.

Not even bothering to factor in any gameplay... I declare this is now the best game ever.
