RIP Whitney Houston....
Would have been better if you had said that Bobby Brown was asked why he had not released a statement and he responded, "it's my prerogative".
I am bummed. Whitney Houston was my grandmother's favorite artist when she died nearly 20 years ago. I've always really loved her because of that, made me feel close to my grandmother when I listened to her music. We played "I'll Always Love You" at her funeral and I still can't hear that song without tearing up.
RIP Whitney, and RIP Nana. :/
Damn you. /bawwwwwwww
RIP Whitney Houston - she had an incredible voice... just sitting here and thinking about it, the power of it was only matched by a handful of other singers in the world. It's a little sad she couldn't get over whatever demons she had.
Whitney peaked long before Mariah Carey did but I've no doubt she'd still be doing gigs today if she would have just not been Bobby's baby that night.
It's a shame that idiots like Lohan and Spears have long and annoying careers while true stars like Houston end up on the cutting room floor and forgotten.
It's also a shame that I'm rather indifferent to her death, because while her voice was great and she had potential as an actress those years are gone and sadly she is no Michael Jackson.
So if they don't live up to MJ (read: no one), you're indifferent? All celebrity deaths really don't affect us unless they are in the peak of their career and we can no longer get any entertainment value out of them. But to say you're indifferent simply because she wasn't MJ sounds silly. ib4 more "prerogative" jokes.
It's my prerogative to not give a fuck
No, I'm indifferent to celebrity deaths in general. What I meant was that her death didn't have the impact that the death of Michael Jackson had on the world. It's sad, sure, but people die every year and I was a different person when MJ died.
Some of you don't understand how much Whitney meant to a lot of girls growing up. Lol. Personally i think Mariah is the better singer, but Whitney was Queen of pop for a time being.
I'm not saying nobody should care that she died, or that she is a piece of shit, or that her death is lollable at best, I'm saying that she practically destroyed her own life and that there are plenty of other people that ought to be mourned when they die.
Obviously this is all a matter of opinion, and I'm not literally saying Michael Jackson was a superior celebrity, or had a more meaningful death; I'm simply saying that Whitney Houston dying should come as neither a shock nor surprise to anybody.
I'm sure that she meant a lot to girls growing up and was important to them, etc, etc, etc, but honestly, how many people talked about Whitney at all? How many people said "Man, can't wait to hear Whitney's new album" or "man, can't wait to see her live again"?
I guarantee you, just like MJ, the majority of fans that are mourning her death probably wrote her off years ago after the national anthem flub and her career became an even bigger joke after her "comeback" a few years ago.
It just amazes me how many people can be so callous and yet pour out sympathy for someone they didn't genuinely care about. Take myself for instance; I've been a fan of Billy Joel since I was a kid. I knew of his alcoholism and stupid mistakes, and yet I've always been a fan. I would care if he died, because he had an impact on my life. I would, however, be annoyed and borderline angry if some person all of a sudden comes up and was like "AOMGAMAS I LOVE BILLY JOEL I SO SAD HE DIED" a few years after hearing them laugh about how he's a joke or an alcoholic prick.
You either support someone or you don't. You don't forget about somebody you care about and then lament them years later just because they're dead.
It's called being a fucking poser and pretending to give a shit out of "respect for the dead". If you can't respect someone when they're alive, don't fucking open your mouth when they die.
I understand it completely.
Whitney was a champion of many black artists and had an amazing voice but her death is no surprise given her drug abuse and self-destructive behavior. She had her time in the sun, her music will live on and her story is complete. Take away from her life that drugs doesn't squash personal issues.
What I take issue with is the window dressing that people do after making fun of 'crack is wack' Whitney and her all but finished career.
Her loss ends an amazing music career cut short by poor choices but don't expect me to suddenly pretend that I adored her and kept up with her latest exploits because it'd be forced - like half the responses on social media since her death yesterday.
It's hardly a shock when a drug addicted celeb dies. see: Amy Winehouse. I expected Charlie Sheen to go first, tbh.
He's too busy winning to die.
Nobody said it was a shock (to my knowledge) but people who liked what she did are sad that she died. Am I in a severe state of mourning? No, but as I posted earlier, this one hit me particularly because of the connection her music had to someone I love who died. I also think it's very sad what the drugs did to her, and what they continue to do to others. However, her music made an impact in my life. I don't begin to pretend that I care about every celebrity who dies. I'm not going to go out of my way to attend a funeral or vigil or anything like that, if nothing, I paused for a bit, played some of her songs, and cried because I miss my grandmother and Whitney's music reminds me of her.
Do I think she was a saint? No. But again, I love her music and it brings me fond memories. That good outweighs the bad for me. You're entitled to your opinion, throw the disrespect around all you want, but at the end of the day, if someone like Whitney (or further back, Joe Paterno) had a positive impact in someone's life, then let that person pause for a moment and reflect on this world's loss.
