I wonder what "not a great swimmer" means as that =/= can't swim at all. It's a swimming pool, if your fiancee is at the bottom of it you fucking go and try and get them.

oddly enough I guess it's harder than you'd think. my husband is not a great swimmer (his parents had retarded logic, he almost drowned when he was little at the beach so they never took him swimming that much afterwards....rather than, you know, getting him lessons...lol) When I learned this I was pretty determined to teach him to be a better swimmer. Teaching him to float was actually rather hard. What seems simple to me, didn't work for him. We have other friends who aren't great swimmers either (idgi either), and they also struggled with it. He can do it now but not to the extent that I can with moving around and doing it in different positions. I can't remember a time when I couldn't swim, so I think I took for granted where and what my muscles do when I do it. It doesn't feel like much, but I guess it's a lot to people who have never done it.

If he's at the bottom of the 6' end of the pool isn't it less about swimming and more about jumping off the bottom of the pool repeatedly to get your head above water?

^ I've never been able to, either, despite having learned to do many other swimming techniques. When I try to backfloat, I just sink.
