I've never bought a system day one, and, oddly enough, I've never regretted it. I typically buy my consoles off of friends for a greatly reduced price, but that probably comes from the fact that I play games into the ground, so I'm still rocking a PSX when PS2 is going strong. There's also the fact that anything the PC puts out will always be superior to its console version, so exclusive games become the only reason for me to put money into a console.

I still think it's way too early for next generation consoles to be release next year. Maybe 2014/2015 would be my goal.

It seems with every generation of consoles there's less and less real incentive to buy them on release.

They're overpriced, usually lack solid release titles, inevitably run into hardware/software issues as a result of insufficient longevity testing as well as simply being new tech ([your color of choice] light of death). All of these problems usually being resolved just by waiting for them to release the new/slim/2.0 model.

Using the PS3 as an example, you paid 500-600$ for a fat, loud, energy sucking 60gb space heater at launch (not even a dualshock controller, the fuck?).

Fast forward a few years and you've got a 300$ slimmer, more efficient, less buggy 160gb unit that doesn't sound like a diesel engine or double as an electric stove. Not to mention a having a worthwhile game library by then (much of which will also be priced down).

Well no shit it's cheaper a few years later. That's hardly a good reason to wait years to play the new games though. Do you also buy 2-3 year old pc hardware? I've bought pretty much every console since the ps2 on day 1, and have never once regretted it. And the only console i've ever had die was my ps2, which lasted ~7 years.

(not even a dualshock controller, the fuck?)

I bought the 60GB shortly after it was released. Yeah, no vibrating controllers and the game library at first was pretty weak, but my PS3 library over time has gotten maybe too big. Add to that all my PS1 and yes, many PS2 games that my 60GB can actually play (both of which are relevant as I JUST purchased a PS2 game over amazon to play, and still play PS1 FF games over remote play), and I'm more than happy with it. I haven't had any issues with it at all, even after putting it in a suitcase and flying it to a couple different cities that I've lived in.

But at the end of the day, to each their own. When I first bought my PS3, I was a high schooler who lived at home and had a part time job with nothing to spend my money on outside of myself, so saving up for it was pretty easy. Now that I live on my own and have monthly bills and car payments, it'll be a lot harder to convince me to get whatever next console early on.

......which is the point. You're buying an already expensive as fuck console and expected to pay 50$ extra for a rumble feature.

As for the other bits, maybe I (and many others) don't have as much disposable income or at the very least don't feel most of these things are worth the initial price tag. I can't remember the last game I bought new/full price with my own money (that wasn't a gift). I found FFXIII just as lackluster 30$ cheaper and a year later as I would have for 60$ on day 1.

Between my brother and I, we went through 4 PS2s (2 fats crapped completely, 1 fat still survives partially, 1 slim), his fat PS3 died on him (he later bought a slim), he's on his third 360, he bought a PSP at/near launch and it long since died on him (by the time I bought one it was one of the newer models, his felt like holding a brick in comparison).

I'm grateful that my fat 60g PS3 still lives on in all of it's partial backward compatibility glory (they done fucked that up).

edit: Also, at the 3 year old PC hardware comment, that's essentially what you're buying when you get a console at launch (oh the ironing).

I guess I have good luck lol. I still have my launch fatty but I put a 500GB HDD in it and it still runs like a champ. Mine has never been noisy though (space heater yes, noise no) but my friends fatty is noisy as shit.

Those are the fans cooling the CPU and GPU. They have different speeds that's why sometimes you hear like turbines. Anyway, my fatty crapped on me a year ago; my launch PS2 is alive and kicking. Regarding the new gen, I think it's too early for new systems, they can still squeeze some more out of the PS3. That being said, Sony won't want to be left behind again, so they're going to follow MS.

    Lets break this down:

    1) I do buy year-old hardware, so as not to pay 1k for a processor and 550+ for a new gfx card. Said 2-3 year-old hardware is still vastly superior to anything that shows up on a console.
    2) When you buy a console day 1, you're essentially buying 2-3 year-old PC tech. For an example of this, look no farther than the "new" Xbox720, already confirmed to be powered by some old AMD tech. You're paying full price for outdated tech, right off the back.

I was hearing rumors one of the big 3 companies will NOT be doing a console this next gen. Since Wii-U and Xbox 720 seem confirmed, is there any word that Sony wont be pushing out the PS4 right away? Wouldn't surprise me seeing as the ps3 console is still pretty damn strong.

I haven't heard that rumor. What I have heard is that Sony's not going to release a new console until 2014/2015. With Microsoft releasing their new one, that might put some incentive on Sony to release one around then, too.

Microsoft and Sony haven't been able to profit off of this gen from what I know, so it wouldn't surprise me. I hope it isn't Sony (actually, I hope it's a bs rumor). Competition is good.

Then again, the whole generation afterwards will be optimized with said consoles in mind lol. Only recently we have started seeing games that significantly differ from the consoles as far as visuals are concerned.

I also wouldn't say that you're paying full price for the tech. As long as we're not talking about release-PS3 prices here.

I think in a statement they had made earlier about not presenting anything for PS4 at E3 they reiterated their 10-year life cycle.

That's the one I heard (but with 9-10 years), meaning the next one would come in 2015/2016 (and news in 2014). Haven't heard any rumors that they're not going to make one, though.

Tbh; I do think consoles need to change a bit. I don't think the formula they're using will be sustainable for much longer; kind of like computer games too. PlayStation need something like a Steam for PS games, and not just for the old games like on PSN right now. Also; they should just do away with Bluray/DVD disks completely and release everything on USB sticks, flash drives - or download.

PS3 being more powerful than xbobx in theory didn't help them in the long run, so I dunno what it would accomplish to release your console so long after competition. Assuming that 720 is coming sooner than 2015.

Games will just be multiplat'd with the specs of the inferior in mind.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is secretly working on a Next Gen, they just don't need to rush it or it's not far enough into development to start talking about. If they are 6 months or 1year behind the Xbox 720 then it's not really a big deal since the PS3 is notably stronger than the 360

Just asking for some clarification on this. There are full games on the PSN, and most new games under 7GB get same-day digital releases. Besides that, there are 2010 and 2011 full games that you can buy(which, once again, have smaller memory sizes). As far as the media goes, I think it would be interesting to have a single format that all consoles can use, aka anything with USB. I'm not sure if there will be issues with piracy, but I'm sure it would be no different than things are now.

OP related, I too think that it is too early for next-gen systems with exclusive/new format games. The only thing I would be willing to buy is hardware with higher quality wireless internet and lower energy consumption.

We received development kits for the new xbox today, something like 200 of them.
