I don't think GameStop would be too happy about that considering a huge chunk of their profits come from used games.
Calling it... 69.99 & 79.99 games incoming!!
used market is a lot bigger than you give it credit for
I can see them making single use codes for almost every game with multiplayer.
Ugh I was telling everyone at work that there will probably be a new Kinect system and noone would listen. If there's anything that can give you a hint on next-gen hardware its black friday prices :\
New generation is sorely needed, the fact these machines are still running 256/512mb of RAM is crazy. I think people underestimate what a new generation of hardware can bring, higher resolution textures, more advanced dynamic lighting, high quality SSAO, parallax mapping and tessellation etc. Not to mention hopefully 1080p will be a standard, and if not then at least 720p instead of sub-HD which seems to happen a lot this gen. Better visuals won't take much work at all, better anti-aliasing, a higher resolution and better frame rates alone should be enough, but models used in game are usually made with much higher detail and scaled down to work in the game. It won't be much extra work at all.
Anyone remember that tech demo that came out not too long ago demonstrating the what's possible with the next Unreal engine? The faster we get to and exceed that the better.
But seriously, if the next gen doesn't support at least 1440p, i just don't know what the fuck. 720p was bad enough in 2005-2006, there's really no acceptable reason for it in 2013+. And it would be quite stupid to limit it to 1080p for the next 5-10 years. Not to mention hopefully 1080p will be a standard, and if not then at least 720p instead of sub-HD which seems to happen a lot this gen.
I'm still waiting for the day where machines are fast enough to just process the zbrush models in realtime. That'd save a helluva lot of time and money on devs not having to bother with creating lower-poly models for the consoles to render.
So much time spent lowering/recreating the source art assets just to fit within the ram and disc limits.....
Shame that tech demo is still a good couple console generations from now unless something spectacular happens with CPU/GPU power before then that makes them cheaper to manufacture, generate less heat, and are more powerful all at the same time.
Yeah I was kind of horrified at the 4k talk @ CES if only because I thought 1080p was going to stay the standard for a long while
Gertsman put it best here:
