    PS3 Disc Tray Issue?

Tried looking for a bit and couldn't find anything, so I'm sorry if this is a repost.

Over the Christmas holidays I got a couple games for my PS3. Went to eject the game that was currently in the system and got this crazy grinding sound from the blu-ray tray, and it wouldn't spit out the game. Tried texting some friends to see if this has happened to them, and was told to hold the Eject/Power buttons at the same time. Crisis averted, the disc popped out first try.

So then I went to put in a different game, and it won't draw in the game as it should. So I'm not sure if the blu-ray driver is completely shot, or maybe it's just out of alignment or something. But powering the system off and on, it makes a ridiculous grinding noise.

Just wondering if it is an issue with the blu-ray drive, will replacing it negate the backwards-compatibility as well? I'm assuming it will.

Obviously as it's one of the first release ones, there's no warranty for it anymore.

No, that has nothing to do with the br drive.

You also can't replace the drive yourself unless it's jailbroken.

Ok, that's where I was confused. I assumed it was the BR drive that helped with the backwards compatibility. Sorta like how you can't play a dvd in a discman. Shows how little I know. >.<
I guess I'll keep in touch with this thread, as well as phone some local places to see if there's anyone in the Edmonton area that can fix it.

I wasn't gonna try and open it up myself, even though there's a trillion videos on YT showing how to and stuff.

I meant the only way to fix it without jailbreaking is to send it to sony. If you are on firmware > 3.55, you will either need to downgrade (requires opening it up and soldering in a chip), or send it to sony who will probably charge you a million dollars for $10 in parts and 10 minutes of labor.

Yeah, I think out of warrenty it costs $150 to get sony to fix it. They fixed my YLOD maybe a year ago, but now my drive won't read that there is any type of disc in the drive (CD, DVD, blu-ray). Think I'm going to take it a local guy who will fix look at it and fix it much cheaper, since it still works for downloaded games and netflix.

It could just be a gear not catching. It is possible to fix that if you can find a replacement gear of the same type. I have not taken apart the bluray drive on the PS3, but what you described as "grinding" sounds like the gear is catching/uncatching. Sony making you pay $150 (plus shipping in some instances) to fix a console you can purchase new for 200~ w/ giftcards and such is a bad idea. Even the fixed ones from Sony don't have great reliability in the long term. Unless you really really want the backwards compatibility I'd try fixing the BR drive/purchase a new ps3 if you cant.

BTW people who fix YLOD/RROD only fix it in the short term. To do it properly they would have to seriously heat whole chip so that it resolders properly, which can't really be done with a heat gun. If you have one fixed like that, sell it to gamestop and get a new one before it breaks again.

ps. Don't buy used consoles from game stop unless you want them to break in the near future because of people doing what I said above.
