    San Diego Comic-Con 2012 (July 12th - 15th)

If you're looking forward to attending San Diego Comic-Con this year like the rest of us geeks then you're going to have to pre-register to actually register to get a ticket to the uber-geek convention of greatness. It looks like they are trying some kind of weeding out process where only the hardest-core of hardcore geeks will end up attending, and it will cut back on people trying to buy multiple passes. Trying to get tickets to Comic-Con has always been insane--trying to get a hotel room has been worse. Hopefully they find a better way to do that this year as well.

This year Comic-Con will take place earlier than normal, July 12th - 15th. Now just because you pre-register to register doesn't mean you are actually going to get passes when they eventually go on sale, which date has yet to be announced, but four day passes with preview night already sold out at Comic-Con last year. It's amazing how fast these tickets are snatched up.

Basically, you will need a Member ID to actually buy your passes. Click Here to sign up for your member ID. There are some additional instructions for people going as press or professionals, so Click Here for more information on what is going on.

I'm considering putting this in to a big West Coast trip I've got planned for July. I'm pretty excited it's so early this year.

If anyone gets an extra 3 day ticket, I'd probably be willing to buy it off them. I've been wanting to do comic con. Did Blizz Con last year. I'll probably end up going for a ticket, but I'll need a backup just in case, and don't want to pay through the nose for one.

The new system I believe prevents people from scalping tickets because the tickets will be bound to the user ID. If you try to buy a ticket for a friend, it requires you to have/know their username.

that line wasn't worth it. I had 0 intention of getting in line at 4-5am to guarantee myself a ticket for next year. shit was retarded and I hope they have a better system in place for this year. I figure as long as i'm ready the moment they go on sale I should be fine.

I agree. We heard the line was ridiculous and people were lined up at 4 in the morning at the Hilton across the street if i remember correctly. It was either stand in line for tickets or stand in line for Hall H for Doctor Who panel. My GF and I said F the tickets and went to stand in line and got to see the panel we wanted to see most. They should make it so that they open up registration for 2013 a week after the event and allow those who went to the 2012 event have first grabs at an amount of tickets set aside. Their server can then check your user ID from this year to see if you attended and allow you to purchase a ticket.

I've never attended before. Anyone know the average costs associated with going? I don't mean the obvious like airfare or ticket prices. I'm staying in San Diego for free. What should I expect to drop on a daily basis inside the Con? I'm also not really sure how it's set up or anything.

never been to SDCC, but have been to NYCC. If you are just going for the experience, you could prolly do it cheap. Food should be the only cost. If you plan on buying stuff? $15-20 a print. significantly more for originals(100s if not over 1k). Figures run from 10 dollars to 500 dollar statues. Other swag as well. In three days this past NYCC I spent like $500 on random shit

I was planning on just looking at stuff. I'm not much of a collector. The main reason I'm going is I'll just happen to be in San Diego at the same time during a long vacation.

Do I have to register for any specific events or panels or anything?

I really just don't know how the whole shebang works.

Assuming they handle it the same(same company does both, I believe). They have lines set up for events and panels. You stand in line and hope to get in. Usually the bigger stuff has longer lines. Sat in a theatre all day(since they didnt kick you out) for the Avengers panel. Marvel, DC, Image, etc. usually have signings, if you wanna meet creators, that they post. Usually, as it gets closer to the convention, all that stuff gets fleshed out.

How long does it take for the tickets to sell out online? I don't know if I can go yet and I'm worried this is the type of thing that will sell out fast. I've only gone to NY's comic con, which to my understand, is complete ass compared to the west coast counterpart.

Unless you plan to buy swag /stuff at CC, its pretty cheap and its minimal outside costs. Be smart and don't buy food at CC and instead walk 1-3 blocks down and buy regular priced stuff at restuarants (better food and cheaper than buying the shit inside CC).

They sell out fast. The good days / 4 day passes are sold out w/in the first day or two. If you signed up for the ID thing and don't opt-out of the Comic Con info tab then your supposed to get an email notifing you when tickets will go on sale

4 day passes sold out within hours for 2011. the website handling ticket requests and sales crashed within a minute going live, 2x. they had to redo the entire thing a few times b/c it was a huge cluster fuck. I was barely able to get single day passes for 2011. as for the lines yes they are LONG. if you go you will not get to see everything. I still think this year will suck with the crowds but it should get better for 2013 with all the stupid Twinards no longer there.

Standing in line for 2012 passes while there for 2011 sucked. I stood in line the first day with a friend who was wheelchaired bound. They had a seperate line for disabled folks and their 1 attendants. It was inside the actual conventation building so had the luxury of shade and air-conditioning. The 1 computer system they had for registering people to 2012 crashed 1 hr. before it was sechduled to began. 4 hrs. of pissed off people. Ahh the memories....the best part was about 2 hrs into the waiting, a half -blind guy with the eye seeing dog walks up to bitch at the front counter then leaves to go back to the end of the line. with a few mins you smell this god awful smell. yep his dog dropped a few right on the carpet floor. It took about 45 mins to get some guy to clean it up. ahh fun times.....

speaking of cons. got invited to Seattle's Emerald City Con. planning to go to it. http://www.emeraldcitycomicon.com/ much smaller and no Twilight so that's always a plus.

Well if you didn't know, the badges went on sale last Saturday at 8am and sold out within about 2 hours. Basically, an email was sent a few days before to registered users with information on registration. From what I heard, the link in the email was broken and you had to copy paste it into your browser or something. My girlfriend and I opted not to buy the tickets and just volunteer like last year. 3 hours of your time for a free pass each day is worth it especially when they are completely flexible with what time you volunteer and you can schedule it around some downtime between certain panels.

Hmmm. I live in San Diego now and want to go. Maybe I'll just go for pictures, but I'd like a badge.

I have a Pax East Badge that I may have for trade if anyone wants to swap+money. Pretty sure I'm NOT going to Pax East now.

I am not sure, but if I recall, badges are bound to accounts that you set up during pre-registration. This prevents people from selling badges or giving them away. When you go to pick up your badge on the day of the event you have to provide a printout from your email with a barcode and a photo id.
