He was in like a box right?
He was in like a box right?
Honestly it just seemed like a stupid idea on Romney's part. I don't see the evil, narcissistic, soulless image being sold in this story as it's told.
He had a wind shield built so he did think about the dog (else why'd he get it?) but he didn't factor in that an animal would be terrified on top of a moving vehicle for hours on end. Some dogs just aren't going to sit still with the kids in the car, poopin' in the crate beats on the seats and this seems more like Romney being a cheapskate than a dog torturer. It costs money to clean shit stains off of Cadillac seats you know.
Sometimes I think people forget the guy's a venture capitalist and probably not a pet expert. His statements about the poor and the status of corporations are more damning than a moron move with his dog.
To me it seemed thoughtless, like he doesn't give much attention toward others. You and I were able to decide that 65+ mph for 14 hours on a roof from Massachusetts to Canada is a pretty cruel idea -- and I'd venture to say most people (dog owners and non dog owners alike) have the situational awareness to deduce that for themselves as well.
Don't see it as an EVIL, thought-out plan to harm the dog, no -- but I do see it as mean, selfish and thoughtless... and those aren't exactly much better. Come to think of it, they're... attributes of a venture capitalist.
.... an open cage.... not that that matters, even crates have open ends
I guess I don't really get it cause I thought dogs stick their heads out the windows of moving cars all the time. Besides couldn't he have pointed the open end of the cage away from headwind?
I mean I get why that would be terrifying for a human, sure. But I don't know if you can necessarily deduce that to a dog.
I think people are making way too big of a deal over it, the only thing wrong with what he did was the danger of the cage coming loose and falling off.
Unless there was bad weather I don't see why the dog would be in any real discomfort with something to shield the wind (and some kind of cushioning on the bottom of the cage).
The dog may have crapped itself out of fear, it also may have been (motion) sick or just extremely excited (I've seen dogs soil themselves over less) but I'll be fucked if almost any dog wouldn't relish in the experience once they realized they weren't going to die.
Which is basically how any dog becomes accustomed to cars in general (scary scary scary > omgomgomgomg lets go for a ride in the car weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee).
1. there's actually a lot wrong with it
2. Well there's the crate falling off and the ambient temperature, plus apparently it was raining at some point in the trip also so there's that
3. i doubt the dog didn't think it was going to die, dogs can't process that way
4. My dog fucking LOVES the car but i doubt she'd love being on the roof of one. in fact i am positive she wouldn't.
2. It was Summer (where has it said it was raining?)
3. Dogs can't learn? That's what you're implying.
4. Your dog's a wuss.
Again, other than bad weather and the danger that the cage might come off, this wasn't some horrible, terrible inhuman act deserving of all this attention.
There's more than enough legitimate reasons to criticize this guy.
Oh agreed, guy's got enough bad shit going on without this but idk it just says something about his nature that i find kinda ... ew.
I'll have to look for the article but I mentioned this like a month ago actually, someone linked me to the article on twitter. The article I read originally said there was a thunderstorm. Also if the dog is on the roof what are the chances he had water? Just wondering. Dogs can learn sure, but I don't think they have the reasoning ability to be in a situation like that and go "oh nevermind, this seems legit" after a while. Something like that is scary, it doesn't just become un-scary through acclimation. Think about every time they hit a pothole or something. Dog probably had a heart attack. And nah, my dog is actually quite smart & has been in the back of a truck etc before -- shit she even flew over the atlantic with me when I lived in Europe. She's been more places and seen more shit than most PEOPLE I know. But she had to be sedated to fly -- it would be cruel to crate her and put her in a loud fucking airplane cargo bay all by herself without giving her something to help her relax and sleep. They actually suggest it. Animals like to go places, but traveling with them & keeping them comfortable and calm is tougher than one would think.
That's an entirely subjective experience, dogs can certainly become acclimated to scary situations once they realize there is no real threat.
Simply because your dog didn't become comfortable with a very specific situation doesn't mean that other dogs can't. Plenty of dogs can and do weather the same thing without significant distress.
Ok, now I'm not stupid enough to strap a dog to the roof of a car and think there won't be problems. But I take umbrage to one point in that passage.
How the hell are those 2 related? In business, hell in Government I want someone with Vulcan like emotional control when it comes to making critical, major decisions in a crisis. I don't want them worried about who they're going to piss off, thinking of the children first or any of that shit. I want them focused on providing the best solution possible to help the most people possible. The Boston Globe’s June 2007 profile of Romney suggested: “It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.”
To me, “it was a tiny preview” of a vapid and desperate egomaniac.
Having said that, I think Romney would provide the best solution to help himself as much as possible. I don't think this illustrates that enough for a direct comparison however. Sorry to derail, that just stuck out very plainly to me.
I think it's a stretch at best. What sticks out to me would be something along these lines: Personally, I would not want to work for a man whom I witnessed being rude to his family on a daily basis. If he's rude to his family, how nice can he possibly be to his employees? Sometimes parallels can be drawn. I think in this case it just makes me go "wow, what an asshole" but I wouldn't escalate that to thinking he was some sociopath.
Just what we need, a man in charge who can't grasp the nuances of international relations because he's too stupid to understand that pissing people off is the #1 way to destroy negotiations and peace talks. Maybe we can get him to throw a "so what? People are murdered everywhere," on top of the burning pile of rage that is Afghanistan. That should solve everything.
I don't want is someone who is too far on the other side of the "think of the children" spectrum, either. Neither of these extremes are good. I want someone who can apply some fucking deductive ability to a situation that may be emotionally charged. He didn't have a backup plan for when he dicked up the dog transport, which either means he's an asshole or was completely oblivious to the fact that his plan might not go off without a hitch. Idiotic.
Yes dogs love to hang their heads out the window of a car. Doesn't mean they want their entire body out there for hours on end. My dogs will usually stick their head out for a little bit then when we get on the interstate the windows go up. The sounds and inability to sleep or drink would be extremely harmful to the dog for any extended period of time.
^Pretty much this. Yeah, I don't see it as a "Romney is a bad, BAD man" angle either, but I do see it as stupid. There's a lot more to it than just placing a windshield to ensure the safety of a dog, and when addressed by it he more or less just laughed it off. There are things such as potholes and sharp turns which can also be dangerous. In other words it just wasn't the best choice. I'm not one to use this to question his negotiation skills, but I would question his decision-making skills.
The lack of forethought & basic concern he displayed is certainly alarming
Don't are if presidential candidate straps a dog to the roof or a hooker to the roof.
I just like how spraying dogshit off his back window is an example of "emotion-free crisis management". Would normal people get so flustered that they'd scream like a girl and then use their own shirt to clean it up?

Could also play into a lack of thought on the consequences of his actions. From what I understand he sprayed down the car and dog and then just kept going. Sure the dog is clean now, but it's now getting exposed to wind while wet which could have led to pneumonia.
Also people are assuming he left the dog in the cage for 14hrs solid with no food and water based on what?
