Counter-intuitive to the name "speculation", but doesn't it actually involve the purchasing and trading of oil? I thought the trading among non-producers/consumers is what artificially drove the price up.

they trade future contracts, which jacks up the price for pretty much everyone that trades in the commodity, while not having to actually deal with the physical commodity itself

Oil is not the only commodity that is speculated on.

Oil speculation does actually involve buying rights to the physical oil itself, regardless of whether you intend to (or could) actually ever use it.

The result can artificially reduce the supply and thereby help to drive up prices, and make them far more volatile.

If you want to understand speculation a little better, you should watch The Pit. It's a documentary about coffee speculation, but I'm pretty sure the same concepts apply. It's streaming on Netflix.

McCain also tells “CBS This Morning” there's a strong field of Republicans who could be the vice presidential candidate.

When asked to suggest some names today, the Arizona Republican said, “I think it should be Sarah Palin.” But when pressed to elaborate, he said “I think we have some very qualified candidates,” citing Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Govs. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, Chris Christie of New Jersey and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.

Palin, the former governor of Alaska, was McCain's running mate in his unsuccessful bid for the presidency four years ago.

I was listening to a story on NPR about this. I guess this was happening to silver also not too long ago. Once the ability to profit dropped a bit the whole market abandoned it as a money printer and the price crashed.

He says he's dropping out because of his daughter Bella not because he would've lost PA. That's kind of fucked up, she's been sick multiple times throughout the campaign but only now does he want to drop out.
