After reading Death of Wolverine 2 I think this was written over a year ago. From Nuke in #1 and now Viper still running Madripoor in #2, things are not matching up to current events. It's like AoU again. But..it was still awesome.

So I'm looking to get into digital comics since I've never had the shelf space to get into paper comics and I was hoping I might get some advice on getting started.

I'm planning to invest in a dedicated tablet for reading comics. What exactly should I be looking for when scoping out a tablet other than a 10 inch screen?

What are my options when it comes to storefronts in general? Will I have to hop from publisher to publisher with everyone having their own proprietary storefront or is there something akin to Steam for comics.

I don't like the idea of my comics being at the mercy of some company's servers. What are my options when it comes to acquiring comics that I'll be able to read once the servers all go dark? Is that even an option?

Lastly, any suggested reading outside of the DC and Marvel universes?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 that I buy digital comics on through Comixology. Other than screen size, check out the resolution as well as capacity, and if there is the ability to use a microSD card. The functionality of tablets are generally the same. You can always go to a brick-and-mortar store to try them out and see what you like the most.

Most publishers have their own storefront, but it is usually backed by Comixology anyway. If you are unaware of Comixology, it is owned by Amazon, so I doubt it goes away any time soon. Most publishers, except DC and Marvel, allow for DRM free downloads of their comics. As such, you can just store them where you choose so you won't lost them ever.

As for suggested reading, it all depends what genres you like. Horror, comedy, action, noir, sci-fi, superhero?

I'd say a little bit of everything but I lean slightly towards more traditional adventure. I've devoured more genres of webcomics than I can count, but really anything with a compelling narrative, interesting characters and at least a dash of the super natural tends to be something I can enjoy.

Some print comics I've enjoyed in the past: Xenozoic, Sandman, Hellboy, Watchmen, The Filth, all the old Nintendo comics from Valiant.

While I love Marvel comics and think there's a lot of good stuff going on there, I think Image comics is where its at comics-wise at the moment. It's honestly a golden age of comics right now speaking from a creator-owned content point of view. Image comics has such amazing stories there that are completely original and varied over every kind of genre. Google the best of Image comics 2013,2014 etc. and you'll find lists that are probably pretty accurate.

Definitely check out Saga, East of West, Fatale, The Fade Out (which just started), Copperhead (western scifi that just started on Wed.), Sex Criminals (humor / real life), Lazarus, and tons more. They might be easier to get into Marvel/DC stuff that has tons of backstory. Although Marvel does renumber to #1 every 6 months or so nowadays.

Marvel's stuff from Hickman and Remender is at the top of my lists atm along with this final run of Fables, but Image is definitely killing it right now. Not mentioned and definitely not friendly to younger ages, but I enjoy Sex from Image atm as well.

Love the Wicked + the Divine as well. Any word on a Young Avengers omnibus from them yet?

That would require reading DC which is just painful since Forever Evil started

Think the only books from them I'm still reading are Earth 2 and Worlds Finest (and I guess Fables kind of counts)

I know Hickman's run on Avengers ends next year, and this Avengers issue ties into that. Freaking hell I need it all now. So much awesome.
