X-Men I would say for more recent good stuff, either Remender's Uncanny X-Force run (followed by his Uncanny Avengers run to present) or Peter David's X-Factor starting in 2006.

Said by Kaslo, but Remender's Uncanny X-Force one thousand times over. The second half of the series doesn't match up as well to the first, but that's not really a knock because the Dark Angel Saga is so lights out amazing that very few comics in recent memory can match up to it.
Springing off Tyven, Jonathan Hickman's Marvel stuff has been great and makes for a very long reading list if you start all the way back at Dark Reign : Fantastic Four.
Not superhero comics, but I always recommend Preacher, Y The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Fables to people. Fables is due to finish up here very soon with issue 150.
I've also been plowing thru Hellblazer again recently, which is a little up and down depending on the writer, but for the most part is a great 300 issue ride.
Thanks for the quick responses.
It doesn't have to be X-Men stuff, that's just what I was into when I was younger, mostly because of the cartoon. I'm up for non-superhero stuff too. I read The Losers a few years back, before the movie came out (never saw the movie). I'll read pretty much anything.
Is there any good service for reading from a tablet/phone? I saw Marvel Unlimited has an app, but a lot of the comments give it buggy reports.
The various Comixology apps for the respective companies are good. If you're at all inclined to acquire comics thru less then legal means (though some places do offer cbz/cbr legally), there's Comicrack for Windows and mobile devices.
chances are the more popular a story the easier it will be to find digitally
Alot of stuff gets scanned digitally by the companies themselves. I've been reading Hellblazer again via Comicrack on my phone because I don't feel like lugging around my graphic novels, and most of the stuff that existed predigital is ripped from official scans done by DC/Wildstorm.
With enough hunting, you can find most everything. The quality isn't always the best.
As mentioned, comixology is a good, legitimate source. They often have things on sale as well.
I use it for everything and it looks nice on my galaxy tab 3.
It's a shame that most uses of Comicrack and it's various plug-ins is inherently going to be not-so-legal, because it is honestly an amazing program especially if you double up on the PC and mobile versions.
Going to start with these. After doing a little bit of Wiki searching, I've found that David's X-Factor is a good place to start as it's a new launch. X-Force Volume 3 (2008) seems to be the lead in to Uncanny X-Force so I'll probably start with those 3 so I don't feel completely lost.
I read the first issue of Uncanny X-Force and definitely wanted more back story than the summary at the end of the issue gave. There was so much time skipping and back and forth that it made no sense to me coming in fresh. Going to keep looking to see if there's a parallel run to X-Force Vol. 3 that features Cyclops' side with the X-Men.
Thanks for all the recommendations. I have a lot of reading to do.
you will want the issues from the reading order too. crossovers can be frustrating like that. I've never used marvel unlimited so i wasn't sure how they would present it. I'm surprised they don't offer it as a digital collection since it is all one story.
Marvel Unlimited has an Events & Crossovers section, but it isn't perfect.
For example, Messiah Complex will list all the issues, but it isn't in reading order.
You can often find the reading orders on Wikipedia though, again Messiah Complex.
Anyone reading the new Moon Knight stuff? Just started reading it yesterday, Ellis has done a good job. Got through the first seven issues last night, holy shit #5 was fucking amazing.
I dropped it when Wood took over. Ellis is always awesome.
In regards to Uncanny X-Force by Remender, yes it is one of the best runs ever BUT it's all the more awesome if you are aware of all his 90's references. It helps to know the legacy of Apocalypse all the way back to 80's X-Factor, 80's Uncanny X-Men when they fought the cyborgs in Australia, Excalibur, and Age of Apocalypse.
Current X-Men by Bendis is unreadable. Awful stuff. I recommend All New X-Men by Grant Morrison.
