Sure would be nice if the fleets didn't lag the fuck out. On the weekend it's like, click on the crew skill button and then count to5 and then it appears. Like early XIV speed... Think the game wigged out on me last night when I exited a FP, it showed me in the station but there was no UI except the top bar and the buttons didn't work but it was asking me to join the conversation of group members and I couldn't do anything.

Oh, and on my toon for Armomech I've learned the same skill from RE twice now and both times the schematic vanished from my list. And I RE'd a 3rd schematic last night which also disappeared after logging out but it also took one of the NPC-taught schematics.

And my focus target modifier key has never worked.

So I downloaded this yesterday and am enjoying the storyline so far. I'm doing Sith Warrior. Has anyone else had trouble with Cartel Coins not showing up in game? I bought a pack yesterday at about 2p and it hadn't shown up yet at midnight. I got to level 10 last night and chose Juggernaut as my advanced class. I have deliberately not read any wiki's or guides just so I could discover a little more on my own without being locked into the "best" decisions. Once I got to the Imperial Fleet I noticed that it said from level 10 on there is a stunted exp growth for f2p players. How bad is it? Should I just go ahead and subscribe? I am not planning on playing hardcore by any means, but if all the storylines are as good as the warrior one, I'll probably play each class a little bit. Any tips or tricks for new folks?

^ Most people play this game for the single player story. If you like the game, I say pay for it, go month to month. You'll get through your first storyline quick enough and then you can decide if you want to do it all over again with another class.

I went ahead and subbed. I have a sith warrior, about to finish my trials and get my lightsaber. Any advice on adv classes? Are tanks in this game needed/useful? Is soloing on a tank going to be exponentially tougher than a pure DPS class?

Secondary question that could answer my others...is there a "good" site to go to for info on this type of stuff? I have checked out a couple of the wikis and the official forum and can't really tell if any of them are any good or not. lol Seems to be a lot of different info out there and it's hard to tell the idiots from the smart people without knowing the game better. I just don't wanna end up taking the advice of the swtor version of zam. XD

There's a couple sites with a ton of info as to what to do for classes and such. As for a Sith Marauder or Juggy, both are pretty damned good and tanks are required for any higher end FP or Ops. Juggy can be soloed up very easily as you'll get healing companions and the rest plus you can spec into your DPS/Tank hybrid setup for some pretty good PvE working and survivability.

Marauder/Sentinel is probably one of the best DPS in the game outside of a smart Gunslinger/Sniper so it's really a matter of which way you want to go.

    EDIT:
As for the OF, the sub-forums for most classes (specifically the spec talk) are actually pretty well informed. Unlike most Official Forums I've seen, people are fairly spot on with builds there regarding tanking and healer setups. DPS is probably the only one that has a ton of wiggle room based on how you play it (ie: Sharpshooter vs Sabo/DF hybrid Gunslingers).

mmo-mechanics has pretty much died. Yeah a few threads are still active, but the OF are much better lately.

Are the story lines basically faction-specific, or are they more class-specific?

Class specific, but you'll visit the same places basically.

Each planet has a faction specific storyline which only varies cosmetically. For example, if you are a Jedi, NPCs will greet you with something like "Hello Master Jedi, blah blah blah", whereas if you are a Smuggler they would say something like "Good to see you, Captain blah blah blah". Each class has their own specific story on the planets though, and occasionally the class stories or characters will intersect with others, but you'd never notice unless you played the others.

The official SWTOR forums are pretty good for builds and such but I would avoid the story sections as they tend to let spoilers fly left and right.

So if I were to play this mainly for the story, would you guys actually recommend one of each class? That sounds pretty excessive.

I would say play through one to completion, and if you enjoy it, give the others a shot to experience the story. Subsequent characters are easier to go through because you'll have a better understanding of how the game works, some startup credits from your other character, and likely some legacy perks. If you do this I recommend alternating between Republic/Empire characters though or you'll find yourself getting burnt out on the faction storylines.

Well that's the speal as Bioware spins it. "This game is playable 8 different times!" Ugh, but I don't think the stale ass game mechanics allow for this tbh.

Still, like others have said, play at least 1 republic/empire storyline at any rate. A lot of people played the Bounty Hunter (but I dunno if that classifies it as "good"), and if iirc one of the Sith stories is really awesome.
My wife and I played Jedi, she was a Counselor and I was a Knight and both of those were cool (Counselor started off a little slow/repetitive but got better)

I'd be willing to give this another shot if they let me have my head slot toggle for being a preferred account. Couple more character slots too. Two is far too few for a game that centers around different stories.

That video was too funny. The problem with playing multiple stories on the same side is that 80-90% of the story is the EXACT SAME. Game is about as linear as a offline bioware game.

As an MMO player, there's neither retention value nor any interest in playing the game because you'll run in to a wall with all the limitations and you'll probably quit before spending money on the game. I don't think their new target audience (the new new "casuals") would appreciate seeing how limited the game is.

As someone who may be generally interested in playing KOTOR 3ish game or they're also one of the many people that didn't want to buy+sub, it may be their type of game? At this point, someone is better off capturing story walkthroughs, like videogamesheaven.net, and recording certain paths rather than sitting through the download times for this game.

The sidestrafe video brings up Turbine and LotRO a lot. Which is probably the best example of f2p.
