How to go about getting into political office.

The idea has always been thrown around for people around me. I'm not certain I'm really the right person (I think I'd be better in some form of advisory role) but we need some less retarded people in politics that won't sell out and I do meet that criteria.

So how do I go about getting started? Where should I aim first? Local government? Just help out a bigger campaign and wait for the next next election? Go right for the state congress?

That dude says it's just 100 dollars to get going and all, but I don't exactly have massive connections. I'd totally be up for claiming to be an Occupy candidate though, as well as go for my registered party: Republican (lol!) though I'd really prefer to run as a member of the Bull Moose party.

Compared to the tools everyone else in politics is, I consider him to be less retarded. He's not my ideal candidate, but I dislike everyone else enough that it doesn't matter.

As far as im concerned you are doing everything right. I would suggest reaching out to the offices of legislators that you really admire or have something in common with (alma mater, home district, etc. ) Where did you go to undergrad? where do you go to law school? If I don't forget about this thread when I am at work tomorrow I will pull a list of where all MoC went to school for you.

the single most important thing you can do to get into office is to work for people in office. common sense right? i recommend working for legislators that represent a community you will eventually want to call home (staffers are the eyes and ears of every MoC. You can literally tell your future constituents that you have been serving them since day 1). Works even better if they sit on a silly committee. Ways and means, house financial services, senate finance, senate banking, ed & labor. You can learn things here that will really equip you for a future in public service.

Tyven speaks the truth. The most important thing in a local election is name recognition, far and away. It's even more important than money, although money is extremely important because it can buy name recognition. To get this, you need to know absolutely everyone of importance in your district. This means local religious leaders, business leaders, political leaders, etc. Get to know them, get them to like you, but most importantly get them to know why you are the single best person to get them what they need. Once you get the hook-up with them, then you'll be able to use them to get you the money you need to help get your name in people's mind.

This isn't an easy process and this is why honest people don't go into politics. It's a hell of a lot of work, and unless you have a shit-ton of money on your own you WILL, and I have to stress that over and over, you WILL have to make promises to people that you won't want to keep. It's the only way to do it.
