Moved out officially when I was 17... generallly wasn't living at home even before that though, doing internships and staying over for long periods in dorms. I prefer to live alone and wouldn't trade it off for anything. Granted, it probably doesn't help that I dislike my family and don't want to have anything to do with them, and that in the few situations where I have had roommates I've been dealt unpleasant ones. I don't really have anything against people living at home, if they can manage it and stand their families more power to them.

Unless you are paying half of what your parents are paying and doing half the chores/maintence, you are leeching off them. I have several friends who tried the "living at home till i can buy a house idea" all but one of them blew the money on stupid stuff like TV, computers, video games, and cars. The other bought a house but is in danger of losing it because he got fired from him job. I think you should live with your parents to start saving up money => get an apartment once you get a decent job and can afford it => buy a house when you saved up enough money and you have a career type job that you wouldn't mind doing forever.
I agree 100% I however was dumb in my younger years and squandered my money away. Learned my lesson, but took far too long.

    Hi Odess.

I don't think anything is wrong with whatever choice someone makes as long as they can deal with it. My best friend still lives with his parents and has always had a job and always contributes. He just isn't sure exactly what he would do yet about housing/renting and is still saving up money. However, this is why it wouldn't work for me:

I am nowhere near any kind of career yet, as I just went back to school a bit over a year and a half ago (and I have essentially started over..), but I did live on my own for a bit. I never did actually mind living with my parents at first, but I ended up moving out a day after I turned 21 because of the friction between us about my loser lifestyle. While living on my own/basically sharing the apt with my ex was great, eventually I came to realize I wasn't going anywhere and I needed to actually do something I'd be happy with. When I canceled my lease and moved back to CA, living with my parents just seemed so confined. It was essentially my motivation to do well enough to make sure I could transfer to a University in a timely manner. I love my parents, and even when we had knock down drag outs, I know they were just trying to do what was best for me. That said, I can't honestly find myself being comfortable living at home after all of this. I currently live in University apartments across the street from campus, and after I finish my UG I will be moving to whatever housing is near whatever Law School I end up attending.

TL;DR I think essentially living on my own once before ruined it for me, and I wouldn't be comfortable staying with my parents in a setting I knew was not quickly temporary, like the year I spent going to CC.

Italian men don't move out until their 30's or even 40's usually, in fact some parents took their son to court to evict him from the family home. ( I think 30-40 ish ).

As house prices in the west in some countries get more ridiculous I see it being more normal.

I live at home. Mainly because I can't afford an apartment. I just can't afford to shell out $220k for an apartment in Stockholm as a student

Shit is so situational. If you get along with your parents/family at home and you're not leeching or creating conflict in the household, why not stay?

My personal situation/opinion: I moved out at 18 when I started college, but I wish I would have had the option to stay at home (college was in Seattle, I grew up in a small town on the other side of the state) because I got into debt quickly and had a shitty job while I was going to school. Also, once you throw a relationship into the mix, it can (and probably would have in my situation) complicate things at home. When you live at home, you (should) abide by the household rules of common courtesy, which is typically a curfew/noise/no sleepovers for the relationship/do regular chores that you hate). My mom is old-school, and still is against my boyfriend and I sleeping the same bed when we visit, but I digress...lol.

Additionally, my debt is now paid off, but it was a struggle. I guess that is the major perk of being able to stay home. Now that I am older and more mature, I could probably move back home with minimal conflict and be a good individual contributor to the household, but I have always had the urge to be on my own and had the drive to make it independently, so I have and will continue to do this.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all as long as you get along fairly well with your parents and aren't a burden on them. If moving out isn't a big priority for you, why not save the extra money? Especially in this economy.

I'm still living at home at 24, despite technically having plenty of income to move out for the past 14 months.

I'm currently saving up ~$1.5-2k each month which yeah, I could easily apply to rent or maybe even a mortgage... but why rush?

I get along perfectly fine with my mom. She does her own thing, I do mine, and for the most part we just mind our own business short of the normal conversations here and there. I get my privacy, she gets hers, and I'm not a burden on her in any way. I pay all bills associated with me and cover most of my portion of the food bills, as well as helping a bit with normal house expenses here and there. I also do a fair amount of the chores, and keep clean. I don't burden her at all.

And this is especially valuable to me since I still have a large student loan debt, but as long as I'm living at home I can pay actually pay that entire balance off within the next 2 years AND save myself another 8 years of payments (and ~$22k in interest). Seems like a no brainer to me.

That said, I doubt I'll be living at home for more than another 2 years (if that), but I'm still figuring that part out. Either way though, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing at all for the right situations.

It's mostly males who stay at home - now more than ever. Women move out now at the same rate as they did over 20 years ago.

If finances permit, moving out is an important step for any person who has an interest in becoming an adult. It boggles my mind when I see people who think that they have to be able to move out of their parent's place and into a house of their own or a (preferably totally awesome) apartment of their own. If you make a decent salary it is totally possible to move out of the house and live with roommates and still save up money.

Granted, these are very trying times and it can certainly put a damper in people's plans to move out and I would never tell someone to move out when they didn't have a job or had a low paying job, however I do believe that as you get older it becomes important to leave the nest for many reasons.

Moved out at 18. Moved back home during my job search at 23. Got job. Now I'm on my own again. My sister actually makes less than you and lives away from home in Los Angeles. Granted she shares an apartment but still LA ain't cheap.

At 18 I went to college and lived in the dorms. Did a year in college, had some shit happen, and went back to living at home. My parents (or rather my step-mother) had been charging me rent since my senior year in high school. I was paying $300/month and attempting to pay off school loans and a car loan with a shitty job. I couldn't afford to keep paying rent at the rate I was making money, and I was at my most depressed I have ever been while living there due to how I was being treated by my family.

I had been forbidden from seeing my boyfriend (who I am still with), and when my bf found an apartment with some friends where we'd each have to pay $200 I moved out. Just took all my stuff in one day and gtfo'd. Resulted in about 5 years of no contact with my father and a huge argument about it within my family which fortunately has mostly resolved itself.

It was a crappy apartment but GOD I loved living away from my parents and on my own. After all those years of hearing them say the same old, "You'd never survive in the real world!" it felt good to prove them wrong. It gave me a sense of accomplishment and freedom, and more importantly gave me the confidence to be my own person and not always look to my parents for approval or consent as I had been a very shy, dependent person. Ended up moving out to the countryside after that and rented again, and now I'm currently back in a dorm and doing school again.

Being on your own is great, but it's best to do it when you know you can support yourself without any major worries. So long as you are A) on good terms with your parents and you can all live together and B) you're trying your best to eventually leave (house or apartment, whichever) I see no problem with staying at home. Financially it's usually a better option if it's viable. I know for myself that unless the situation was absolutely dire and I had no other options, I would not move back in with my parents. Seeing them every so often makes it so I can have enjoyable conversation with my stepmother, lol.

i went away for school like a G and had an apartment with some bros. paid for it thru waiting tables. moved back home after school and lived with mom dukes until i was able to pwn my student loans and got my career off the ground (almost 2 years). now i share a house with my bros (cheap as fuck rent) and stack loot and play with my bitches titties in the club.

i dont hate on people that stick with their parents, as long as they are doing it for the right reasons. NOT TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES OR STORE A RETARD IN THE BASEMENT.

I'm not moving out until I find a place worth purchasing, not simply renting.

I went to college at 18 far away from home. Ended up hating what I was doing a semester in. Went back home. Figured out what I wanted to do while working a $9/ hour job. Left home for FL to a college a month before my 20th birthday. Completed college at a month before my 22nd birthday and got a job offer right as I graduated, company payed for me to move to LA and now I'm just starting my awesome career.

Only time to worry is if you turn 35 and are still living at home. Then it might be time to check to see if the Macdonald Triad applies to you

This thread reeks of approval-seeking though. You're 30 and still making only 40k a year in an area with a very high cost of living (where?) - if you aren't hustling to make that number much higher in the coming years, then I think you're being complacent and using your lack of bills to stay in your station.
    yeah, this.

Moved out when I was 18, never moved back unless I needed to go home for like 2 weeks between leases or anything. Dorms for 2 years, apartment/house with friends for 3. Was in Chicago for an internship while finishing up, now I'm back and working. Don't have any issues.

In fact, I honestly think people need the experience of living away from their parents so they can learn from it. You pick up on a lot of values while you're gone.

i definitely agree. some of my friends have changed for the better because of this.

it also really depends on your situation at home, lol. when the majority of your family are on drugs, doing bad things, or con artists, sometimes its good to escape, lol. despite my current financial situation, i've left and never thought twice about moving back. i have no idea how i grew up in an environment like that and not be into drugs/alcohol/or killing people lol, but i'll be crazy if i were to stay there regardless. thank you FFXI and videogames

When I was 28 and briefly unemployed, I lived at home for about 6 months (got a job in 1, then found an apartment after winter passed).

Agreed. My friend held off marrying his gf for a couple of years because he didn't want to be her first "roommate" after living at home her whole life. She never did move out and now that they're married and living together, he's constantly frustrated by her inability to do even basic budgeting/life planning.

I think the cut off for living at home is 30. You can make for some good reasons to live at home up till then, but after 30 it becomes real wierd, 25 would be desirable. It's still wierd pre 30, but it just gets inexcusable after that.

Rule of thumb: If you can live in a decent house (read: not an apt), and still be fine, then it's probably time to move out.

My personal experience? I still live at home with my family and other siblings who are in their 20s. My family is just one of the rare ones where everyone gets along, and everyone enjoys the company of the others; Hell, my parents see their parents and siblings every day. I could move out any time, but why? One of my sisters just moved out since she got married, and i'll be married in the near future, so i'll obviously be moving out then. I make three figures (totally meant six, yo) a year, no debt, etc, and have enough to buy a house outright, but I plan on moving to her apt while looking for a house together. I dont really see the stigmas with still living with my family, I love my family and glad im always around them. They have always given my freedom to do anything I want, and in return I give them some cash every month, and as an extra bonus this year im flying my parents anywhere in their world, plus their hotel, on my dime. As far as the "living away from home experience", I agree it's something that people need to have, and even though I may live at home, it's something I have plenty experience of.
