reprecussions of using 15v output adapter with 12v input device

sup yall, i just found my old 5.1 surround system with all the cables except for the adapter for the extigy which is a 12v required input. the only adapter i could find in the house that wasn't used is a 15v ouput.

what kind of harm can this do? what about fire or shock?/

I'm not a pro in electricity but for imo it's either that

    1) It won't work a all
    2) Gives too much power to your System and might break it of overpower

A quick google says you shouldn't. Google "using a 15v adapter on a 12v device".

    general advice for power supplies:
    - voltage HAS to be the same, higher V can break the plugged device, lower V will most of the time not work because of not enough power
    - ampere should be the same or higher
and obviously, plug should be the same with the same pin layout

Need to make sure the polarity is the same. That could potentially ruin some stuff. That's the + and - circles with lines going together and one makes a C around the other where they meet. Adapters are usually pretty cheap at radioshack I think.
