    Networking question

Ok BG webs I has a question.

Currently I get my TV/Phone/Net through Century Link with their new PRISM service. As a part of this everything comes into their modem/router, before going back into the house. I have my existing network sitting behind it.

    World -> PRISM Modem (PM) -> Linksys E3000 (E3)

Everything in my house connects to the E3000 (a full wired network and wireless connections). The PM has the first connection and it's own subnet (.0.whatever) and the E3 has is own subnet (.1.whatever).

Now occasionally I run into an issue where I want to connect to the PM for my net instead of the E3. However when I do that I can't access any of the shared drives or external storage on the E3.

I don't want to get rid of the E3, I like the guest access and shared external drive too much. Is it possible to put the E3 and PM on the same level (subnet?) so that no matter which I connect to I can access something on the other? Am I missing something simple?

A solution to what you are doing is setting up your E3 as a repeater, or access point. This will allow you to micromanage what people have access to when them come over your house or whatever as a guest. Then you can just use the PM as your primary gateway.

Is it just not being discovered by windows, or can you not even connect like this?

    \\IP\Sharename
    ex: \\192.168.0.1\Media

Also, I know this setup too well. Verizon does the same thing where the TV runs through the modem/router. I typically like to let my DD-WRT (in your case the E3000) handle the internet and let the TV reside on my network inside. I can't think of a reason why you would ever need to be on your "TV" network if you made your E3000 router the outer-most network. Why do you need to ever be on the PM network?

    I'd change it to:

    Code:
    Internet > E3000 > TV Network (PM)
                  |
         Wired/Wireless
               Clients

I was wondering if that would work, I think in repeater mode. Just wasn't sure if I would still have access to all the features (PS buy my psp already! )

I can't change it though, that is the problem. Literally everything is run from their box, it is modem/router/tv server/phones/what the fuck ever all in one. I haven't tried connecting via IP, I will give that a shot tonight as a stop-gap solution. IIRC just doing the network name wasn't enough though.

Interesting. What is the PRISM modem/routers model?

You should be able to configure the E3000 to manage the connection and have the PRISM router get an IP from the E3000, it should just be happy with internet access and not effect your other services (TV, phone, other junk). I just prefer my PC's solo incase whatever the router does for TV hurts how the router performs.

I'm guessing you either need to supply login info, or the modem is registered by MAC address. If your router obtains an IP automatically, and you can't use another modem or plug directly into PC and get internet, its registered by MAC address. Your router (E3000) supports DD-WRT which supports MAC cloning. You can just put your PRISM router/modem's MAC address in there and it should connect as your outer-most network.

I forgot to look last night but the modem/router they use takes everything from the phone line, feeds the cable back into the houses existing cable, and also handles all the internet shit also. The set top boxes connect via wireless to pull search info and other stuff down (little apps for gas prices, weather, etc) and then into the existing cable to get the actual shows. So there is no way of putting the E3 before it, or of using any other type of modem.
