Really old PC games (warning, there may be nostalgia involved)

I may be admitting that I'm halfway to yelling at kids to get off my lawn with this thread, but I didn't see anything in the search.

Anyone still have fond memories over the really limited and ugly games that were fun as hell?

I was probably more of an Ultima fan when I was growing up (at least through 5, 6 and onwards weren't anywhere near as fun), but I've come to appreciate the Wizardry series more and more. It never tried to radically remake itself from game to game, but it got more and more involved. I have many fond memories of Wizardry 7, even though I have no idea how I managed to stick with it after the beginning was not really friendly. And the less said about me trying to pick locks and disarm traps on chests using a 16 shades of gray laptop the better.

Adventure games were another favorite of mine, but I think they were probably the less friendly ones out there. I'm probably still scarred by that Babel Fish puzzle.

I must admit that even today when I hear "Wolfenstein" I think about the Muse Software game and its sequel rather than the FPSes.

    Zork.
    Bard's Tale.
    Dark Castle.
    Phantasie.

All played on my father's amber monochrome monitor on an 8088.

The first Infocom game I ever played was Deadline, though I played the Online Systems adventure games on an Apple II+. To this day, I'm not sure how you were supposed to know to turn off the lamp to get past the boar in Cranston Manor, though my brother and I managed it somehow.

Dungeon Keeper, if that counts as "really old" lol

    EDIT: To justify:

    RTS game
    Cute Graphics
    You're the bad guy
    Nice balance/system
    Micro-system of unit happiness/hunger/pay/conflict
    Horny

If the multiplayer system was more modern (i.e. it worked) then I bet this game would've flourished more as a franchise

Games that I played when I was little that I clearly remember and thought were awesome:

    Rogue
    OutNumbered!
Mega Man (the really shitty PC version, played the hell out of it and actually beat it)
    Airborne Ranger
    Gunship
    King's Quest 4
    Carrier Command
Lord of the Rings (had to save every three seconds in this game due to all the bugs)

Then later on when we actually got a fancy computer with a CD-ROM:

Crusader: No Regret as well as : No Remorse

Of course, Doom & Doom II
    Star Wars: Dark Forces
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
    Day of the Tentacle
    Mechwarrior 2
    Spycraft
    Syndicate

I played the hell out of these games, mostly because it's all I could get my hands on. I never had a console growing up, but looking back I'm glad I didn't. My favorite out of this list is probably a three way tie between Crusader, Day of the Tentacle, and Mechwarrior 2. God those were great games.

    Stunts.

It took a whole 13 years before Trackmania came out and topped that game.

I made so many fucking tracks in it, abusing the physics engine and trying to do crap like multi loop-de-loops, jumps, and corkscrews without letting go of the pedal.

huuge adventure games fan back in the days, so add these to those from renzokuken:

loom (playing melodies to use spells instead of your generic adventure actions. awesome. also the bittersweet end)
    the secret of monkey island
monkey island 2: lechuck's revenge (best adventure game in history with DotT)
    full throttle (epic)
    simon the sorcerer
king's quest V (i died a thousand deaths in that stupid desert and still have the original box with 5'25 disks)
sam & max hit the road

also have fond memories of lands of lore, a first person rpg.

Despite the history of the King's Quest series, I prefer the Quest for Glory series (though it was originally Hero's Quest), specifically the second and fourth games.

Anyone else ever play Wizardry 4: The Return of Werdna? I can't believe that I mapped out a path through that stupid mine field on the 7th level of the prison dungeon. It was a very cool concept, playing the villain from the first Wizardry game and breaking out of the 10 level dungeon prison to wreak your revenge.

Sadly jumped into PC gaming during the cd-rom era so I only have limited knowledge of games pre-cd sans Carmen Sandeigo, Oregon Trail, and stuff I played on Comoddores and Apple 2Gs at school.

    Star Control 2
    Civ 2
X-wing and Tie Fighter (not the vs one that came out with the upped graphics)
    Wing Commander
Dune (I miss Westwood making good RTS games, thanks EA)
