I have att uverse and dont have a home line - my internet+tv is about $110 a month, electric bill only about ~35 per month

im not really sure what plan uverse I am on. Last time I called to reduce the number of channels and save a few more bucks per month, the brother on the line told me to wait, came back to the phone, and reduced my bill $25 but made my internet faster.

Of course, there was a more extreme example of that one pirate-ish guy (I forget his name) who was sinking ships of supplies sent to 3rd world countries. The upshot of it is that people should be able to support themselves and live off of their own labour and the proceeds from it.

Should the companies work for free? No. Are they charging way too much? Yes. But I think there is definitely merit in attempting to view this situation with all the bleeding hearts set aside, and compare this to a different type of (non-life-saving) product.

It's never a popular opinion espoused, but look at the piracy of the supplies being shipped to 3rd world countries example, and again change the emotionally charged situation from starving and dying people to that of a forest of trees (hear me out). Oddly enough, forest fires are a good thing for a forest because the soil that results from all the ash is actually very rich and the trees that later grow from it have a very healthy environment, which can support itself. An overpopulated country isn't really being helped by prolonging the inevitable righting of the population pyramid (this is probably a horribly out-dated model, I apologize), but in short, eventually a population that can support itself should arise.

Bringing this back to overpriced life-saving drugs? well, for better or worse they have every right to keep doing what they're doing, and we have no entitlement to their intellectual property rights and its boons. It's not a pretty situation but once again the rich can afford the better medicine, nothing new. If you want it, then petition your government to have it funded/reimbursed w/e but even still that is done via taxes and then equal access to medicine for all etc. None of that means the drug companies owe us anything though

Private companies have no entitlement to intellectual property rights. This is a monopoly granted by government either because of lobbying or because it is felt that the benefits outweigh the harm. The moment you brought Atlas Shrugged into this you made your entire argument suspect, but i decided to be kind and point out exactly where you're wrong. And even if property rights were somehow a product of the free market, it doesn't prevent us from interfering to promote a more useful result.

I think the problem here revolves more around the fact that different people have different definitions of 'living comfortably.'

Going out to lunch every single day isn't part of my 'living comfortably' situation, and obviously doesn't seem to be part of Demos. I certainly have worked at places where if I wanted to I could have, and while I wouldn't have the selection of central NYC I still had plenty of options. And when I've entertained working in NYC, 'expanding places I could have lunch' was not even remotely part of my consideration.

It's lunch on a work day. If I want to spend money on a good time, why would I do it for lunch? No thanks, I'd rather pack lunch, pocket the extra ~$2,000 a year and use it for something actually fun.

I've met many a people by now who, after everything necessary for the month is paid for (all bills, loans, etc), can bank $200-$2k+ but still find a way to spend alllll that extra money on large amounts of unnecessary shit every month. Then when they hit tough times they shit bricks and complain about not having the money/go into debt. Tis America.
