Yeah, I was only talking about a job with hourly wages. I know that with a salary, you are supposed to be there as long as it takes to get the job done, 60 hours/week paying the same as 40.

And with class action suits, unfortunately the ones you hear about never seem to actually make a difference for the employees that were wronged. They always seem to be the lawyers get 90% of the settlement, and the rest is dealt out in $5 checks. Of course, this might just be the ones the lawyers start and not originated at the employee level.

Don't presume to know what I was born into any more than I will presume to know where you came from. I'm fortunate to have had a mom that worked 100 hours a week so my brother and I had what we needed and we had plenty of obstacles. But to compare growing up in even the worst environment in the us and a third world country is a fairly bad point to make.

What do you call working 5am til midnight 7 days a week? I'd detail what it's like to run a business without help but I don't think a single person here cares. And, on that note it's time for bed.

If you need to work 133 hours per week to get by, and don't have time to do anything but sleep+work, then yeah, that's exactly what welfare is for.

In a class action suit there is probably a few people that have a legitimate claim and everyone else who wants to get tacked on and get a piece of the pie. All they do is devalue the claim of the few who deserve it. I'm not supporting companies who have bad practices but for crying out loud if you don't like the job either leave it or shut up. I complained about my job on these forums occasionally with a passion any time a thread rose about the for profit colleges, mostly just venting. At work I shut up, worked hard and earned my paycheck and when it finally got to the point I couldn't take it, I got a new job. Took all of 3 days and i'm making more money, i'm happier and life is better. Go me. I didn't run to every employee and try to fight the man for making my life miserable while I was there.
When it comes to taking shit without retribution, I'm confident I have you trumped, so we can skip the rhetoric and get to the point. Whether you personally believe they are entitled to money, a violation is a violation. It is not a handout. It is compensation because someone broke the law and has infringed upon someone's rights. In most class action suits, a majority of the victims aren't seeking anything; they're involuntarily included until they voluntarily opt out. Thus, no matter how you view the scenario, equating suits to handouts is a product of media hype.

I work 85-105 hours a week during the summer and make ludicrous speed amounts of money. When I enter to the administration side in a few years the pay scale goes plaid.

Really shouldn't have been that hard to comprehend. Life isn't fair across the board but I would rather sacrifice some working conditions to be gainfully employed and work hard to earn what I get than always look for some excuse to "fight for my rights" and look for a handout or as some have said "get paid" in a class action lawsuit.
As others before me have said, what you are legally entitled to isn't a "handout," especially if you were working at the time. That you think so does not make you smart, nor admirable, nor impressive. It makes you a fool, plain and simple.

You are, as was mentioned before, the sort of person who is a willing slave. There is nothing noble about this. You toil away for no real reward, but for some reason, being paid less than you're worth and spitting in the face of every person who ever fought to have those laws written is impressive in your eyes. You mention a mother who work hard, but working conditions have been improving steadily over the past two hundred years (though in the past hundred years, especially), and no sane parent wants their child to be in a similar situation.

In fact, stating that your mother worked so hard as if this legitimizes your attitude is only tragic rather than impressive. What parent tries their damned best to give their child a good life, only for them to grow up and prize the slavery more than the dream of a better future? How unfortunate for you, thinking that the past is the golden example, and that the law and fighting for a better future is meaningless. I would not blame your mother for not knowing better, but I certainly take pity on you for your willful victim mindset.

In case you're unaware, adults far braver than cowering servants like you are the people who fought for those laws. Whether through campaigning in the sweltering sun, dealing with uncooperative employers cutting their benefits, battling it out in a courtroom or whatever was needed at the time, they spent many years fighting for better treatment.

If you feel that this country is going "down the shitter" because of this, that is an especially foolish mindset to have, as countries with much happier people don't suffer like this. This doesn't make them less impressive; after all, they have superior health care, and the aforementioned "happier" isn't a mere opinion, but it's according to the results of happiness indexes. They may make the same amount of money someone in the United States does, but due to subsidiaries and other benefits which the government can afford (due to happier people equaling more spending and a healthier economy), they are living better lives.

I've worked in sales positions and the reason i'm always in the top 3% is because I work harder than you (perverbial), I don't look for reasons and excuses to be on the bottom and cry that it's not fair.
Reasons are justifiable, and what you're legally entitled to is a fine reason to fight. Excuses are for cowards. You believe that all the hard work you've put yourself through places you on a higher pedestal than people who believe their rights are, well, their rights, which doesn't make you more admirable than them. It makes you pitiable, the toiling worker who isn't appreciated for rolling over and taking it in the ass because you're "fortunate" to be enslaved, which is just as pathetic as a layabout who does nothing.

Do you like your weekends? Those were fought for. Do you like that you don't have to work in unsafe conditions? That was fought for, too. Do you like that you can't be discriminated against for your race, sex, nor a number of other factors? That didn't come magically, either.

Are you calling all of those people lazy layabouts, despite the fact that campaigning for legal change is much more difficult than your slaving away at a forgettable job? Do you truly think that the path you've taken is more admirable than theirs?

    How pathetic of you.

I do absolutely love my job, and I've fought every step of the way to get here. I've been working since I was a child as well, which included getting a waiver from the state on Child Labor Laws, since, you know, I understand the importance of my rights, and I'm not a miserable sucker. I don't "look the other way" while that law is broken.

I have never accepted poor working conditions, whether it was a restaurant in unsanitary condition, a company who violated state law by not paying their employees for overtime, or an employer who was truly verbally abusive to their employees (mere punishment doesn't count; personal insults and prejudice do).

Yet I've gone through the same work weeks you've described, I've suffered permanently debilitating injuries as a direct result of some of the work I've done, and I have never backed down.

And before you admire me for being unique, understand that I am not that. There are millions of other people like me who have also fought for their rights, and to have their legal entitlements enforced. You don't simply stand there and expect it to happen, as nothing works that way, unless you're born into a wealthy family that doesn't give a damn what you do with yourself.

I don't want your admiration, I want you to realize what a miserable fool you are. You aren't a harder worker. You're a disappointing idiot.

Since I don't sit here and F5 I may or may not respond again, but for what it's worth I hope this clarifies my prior position and statement. And, not this wasn't particularly directed at you, but the mentality. I don't know you enough to speak specifically about you, so please don't take offense.
Please do take offense to every word I've said, as unlike you, I do not pretend to have delicate sensibilities, nor do I apologize after conducting an entirely serious discussion. Debate is not for the weak of heart, and please, do not pretend that it is.

Of course, seriousness does not appear to have much value to you. Only mindlessly wasting your life and criticizing those who give a damn about what our society affords is, evidently, of any use.

You claim to feel pity for this country, but you do not. If you do not care for its laws, and you simultaneously do not fight for whatever you wish would take its place, but merely toil away and somehow believe yourself better, you are nothing. You are not even a drop in the ocean. You are a waste of space.

    Enjoy your worthless existence.

Imagine if retailers took the "no handouts" approach.

"Hey, I know we agreed to sell you this product for $300, but now that we have your money, we're gonna need another $200 before we give it to you. No handouts!"

So, I just want to understand this, because I don't think that I really do thus far. One of the opinions held, and being espoused in this thread is that working really hard is a virtue, even if you're being exploited for the profit of others?

People talk about a lack of a work ethic being what is wrong with this country, that nobody is willing to put their head down, power through, and work for the life they want. I submit that it is not a lack of work ethic, of drive that is ruining this country, but a prevalence of selfishness. Working in unsafe, unfair, or unjust conditions for the profit of someone else is selfish. You want your own safety, your own profit, and you ignore the larger damage it is causing.

It's a nice little cycle, an employee lets it go because he needs the money, and the boss learns he can get away with it. Then, that guy's boss' boss learns he can expect better numbers from his subordinates without increasing their resources, and can make himself look better. This goes on, and on, and on, and eventually, shit like the banking crisis happens, because people were shortsighted and selfish, and thought they could get away with it long enough to be ok.

Should people not have fought against the Nazis, because it was going to hurt their way of life? People could have kept ignoring what was happening in Europe, but they didn't, and the world is a better place because of it. The same could be said of civil rights activists. Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and many others could have sat around, lived their life, and ignored what was going on around them, but they didn't. They suffered for the greater good, and progress was achieved.

It's not a handout to want what you deserve, and working a shitty job for an unfair wage doesn't make you a bad-ass for having such great work ethic. As a society, we make the laws, we decide what's acceptable, and what is not, and it is up to all of us to make sure that those decisions are upheld.

You say a lot to someone who in all liklihood enjoys their life more than you. I never once said I slave. I work 40 a week....but hard in that 40cheesy because I have pride and integrity. Something you lack. I work now for one of the best co.paniea to work for as voted by the tampa business journal. Most of what you are trying to say about me is irrelevant and doesn't apply so im sorry you wasted so much thought outting your long oost together.

I go to disney 15 times a year, go out every weekend and enjoy my life. Im nobodies slave when I make the choice that I want to be the best and work hard to get there.

You might want to inject some reality into your thoughts and not get hung up on being emotionally charged into saying things that dont apply.

See, i wouldn't have risked my life to fight nazis either. Obviously i don't think everyone should have just let hitler do wtf ever he wanted, but myself, i'd have never gotten myself killed to stop him. It's easy to say the world is better off as a result, but if that result also includes my death, then fuck you, my world is far worse off.

How did we get from working at a job that might be doing something shady...to hitler, nazi's and your death? Come on man.

And Kohan the only thing else to respond to in your post, is that if I were to get offended by what someone said in an online forum that alone would be the only sad thing. Like I said last night, I don't know any of you from anyone else and your ideals have no effect on the outcome of my life.

I hate the socialist mentality that individuals don't need to work hard for their own gain and everyone is looking for someone else to pay their way. I work hard to enjoy my life, and I do very much. Nothing else needs to be said, because you won't change. You're not all of a sudden going to wake up and work harder to achieve the type of life you want. I'm under no dillusion that the "american dream" is within anyones reach but we only get this one life. If I have to work hard 40 hours a week for 20 or 30 years so I can enjoy my life and retire then so be it, i'll do what I need to do.

What I won't do is cry woe is me this company is profiting off of 2 hours a week i'm not getting paid for. Why did I stay at my last job for so long even though I hate it? Because in the grand scheme of things i'm not the only one affected. I was a supervisor in charge of 12 other individuals who's lives would be negatively affected if I did what you suggest. I worked for a college, which while it sucked, students who worked with me had a better experience because of it as I am the type of person to work on their behalf and not just sit in my seat bitching all day. Meresgi how many shitty experiences with online colleges have you had? You had it because people like this who wanted to bitch all day didn't help you when you needed it, I would have.

So you can continue to say what you want about me, it's hardly enough in a few posts in a thread to understand every aspect and variable of every situation to pass judgement on the whole of an individual. I've not judged you, just the mentality but you're very quick to judge me based on a few thoughts. One of the big differences between you and me. We're not comparable. I don't think i'm better than you or vice versa, we're nothing alike in our approach to life and it's apples and oranges to argue this further.

Can you just answer how expecting to get paid for hours worked is a handout?

Edit: also, wtf do you do at disney 15 times a year? That shit gets boring after I go once every 5 years lol
