how hard is it to find some private server info.. honestly i just wanna fuck with character creation for about 3 hours lol..
NewTeraOnline is a Russian ran private server of the KTera client.
You will need a downgrade patch from here. Version 1607 if I remember correctly, been a month or so since I set this up.
I haven't really messed with it much aside from character creation; I wasn't able to attack mobs and been busy.
Does anyone know how people setup private servers? Do they somehow find the code for the servers or do they reverse engineer the client or something?
As I'm sure you can imagine, there's multiple ways to go at this. However, on a general view it goes somewhat like this:
- Network traffic packets between a real retail server and a client are analyzed in a controlled enviroment. For example, what packets are sent during a correct login and what kind of response the client expects to recieve, what packets are sent when attacking and what is sent back, etc.
Some or all of this traffic can be encrypted, so finding a way to decrypt it would be among the things to do first or, at least, a work around so that the client is fooled enough.
- Once networking is in place, the actual server's mechanics need to be implemented. This includes damage formulas, implementation of skill use and timings, implementation of monster AI (for example, how they roam, how they attack, etc) This is where private servers eventualy fail flat.
- Other important factors that need to be implemented are chat systems, grouping, etc.
In general, the network traffic is reversed engineered and the rest is re-implemented.
Because there's no access to the original code and algorythms used by the developers, it's relatively complex to get the formulas and AI closely similar to the original game as it would need a lot of work to get them. Work like the one done in XI by its players, for example.
The alternative to all of this is to get ahold of leaked server code. I believe this happened with Ragnarok Online, many years ago.

I find playing on private servers both cheap and stupid. They tend to be filled with even more cheating than real servers, an even worse community and in general worse gameplay. 10€ a month for a game I enjoy is definitely not something that will harm my economy.
So is IGN doing another beta code thing this coming weekend? I got a buddy who wants to get in and try out the game and see if he likes it so i'm trying to hook him up.
@Shassira, thank you. That was very interesting.
Bit of a derp question, but if you pre-order on Amazon does that immedieatly get you a beta code? Are there limitations on one's pre-order beta access, ie weekends only? And if I pre-order on Amazon, am I paying the full amount now or just a deposit?
Thanks for the responses. Really liking the looks of this MMO and would love to get in and play with some BGers.
Not sure how it works for Amazon but EME charged me the full amount then refunded it back sans the $5.40 for the pre-order amount.
Amazon gives you a code within two minutes for all the betas, head start, and the items (same as everyone else). No money down, cancellable at any time.
Nice, thanks Senji. I know what I'm doing tomorrow.
Make no mistake; every class needs gear. A Lancer, in shitteh gear, will get a party rolled just fine, in HM dungeons, no matter how 'skilled' they may be. Sure, you'll probably be the last man standing, but if you don't have the gear, to keep the encounter together, it's pure chaos, people will die, lose millions in crystals, and that's just on the first boss.
I didn't get a chance to go through and dungeons last beta. So I wanted to know how often crystals break when you die in there. Is the chance different based on the quality of the crystals? Also are dungeons how most people were making their gold during the beta?
i died a few times trying to solo balasiks on sorc.. and im sure i broke at-least 2.... outa my 3 attempts. I suck at keyboards.. bought a naga mouse to hopefully help with the not wanting to break my fingers while running and trying not to die & cast all at the same time
Yea, I got a Naga mouse too following the end of the first CBT; tried it on the first EU CBT and fell completely in love with it.
As for the crystals, I died I think three times in the NA CBT and broke one on all three deaths (none were in dungeons though), so I think the break rate is pretty high. Then again, I'm sure there are other factors that affect it, but that's just my experiences.
