Read a CNN article this morning about how China isn't denouncing them b/c both are massive trade partners and Russia isn't denouncing them because they make around 4 billion a year selling weapons to them. The U.S. can't really talk much, though, considering we literally gave Mexican cartel hands high powered weapons and didn't do much to stop them from killing not only Mexican police and civilians, but U.S. agents as well.

Whoops? Be glad that you all can experience first-world problems, like traffic jams in the morning and spilling coffee on your newly-pressed shirt. I know I'm glad, even though, at the time, I bitch like crazy.

Taken to a logical conclusion any support of those rights would be a tacit acknowledgment of the illegitimate and immoral actions those nations have taken in Chechnya and Tibet, among others.

The resolution China and Russia vetoed wasn't even drafted by western powers it was originally drafted, and most energetically pursued, by the Arab League.

Bashar's father Hafez al-Assad was also a murderous cunt who faced massive uprisings which no one pretended were some shadow surrogates of the United States. The fundamental fault line in Syria is that a secular Shiite minority has ruled over a more religious Sunni majority with a brutal and intractable iron gauntlet for forty years and whatever desperate propaganda the increasingly unstable regime throws out about foreign agents fomenting dissent should be laughed at for the garbage it is.

Syria doesn't even have oil, they don't have WMDs, they aren't strategically situated geographically, and they have ceased their actions against Israel; the west doesn't give a fuck about or have a geopolitical interest in their country which is why no one has done anything despite the fact that Assad's crackdown has been far more brutal than Mubarak's or Gaddafi's.

I hate thinking about suffering like this, because its so easy to look at something like this and automatically downplay any other form of suffering as "insufficient". Suffering is suffering of all types, and I'd hate for people to start pulling some "Apartheid was bullshit compared to THIS" rhetoric. Its sad that man is so predictable, and yet, with the way politics work, there can never be a quick solution to end the suffering, no matter how obvious the solution may seem.

I can see why some want to abolish the U.N. When you have dissident members that refuse to toss their hats in the ring because of personal agendas with an obviously-corrupt regime, this is what you get, and its terribly sad.

It's not so much the UN itself. It's the security council.

I think if you feel a coalition should be put together to stop the Syrian Government, you should volunteer and do it yourself.

That said, explosive rounds aren't the only way to make faces melt like that. I don't think the US is in a real position to respond, if we weren't wasting our cock in another piece of slant looking for oil we might actually be able to respond to situations worthy of a response. I wouldn't be in favor of something like Iraq v1 or v2, but rather Grenada/Panama. That isn't to say we won't, but rather that we should not.

I'm tired of the US trying to fix everyones problems, why don't some of these countries claiming to be better off do something about it. Not to be a douche or anything which I sure I'm sounding like one, but we need to fix ourselves too :/

The Chinese/Russians much rather watch us go in, cause regime change and wind up with another anti-Israel/US Islamist government on our hands.

The problem is that the US provides a security umbrella, which allows other countries like the ones in Western Europe to just rely on American military power rather than investing in their own military. It would help if the US would just cut back on its absurd military sector and let other countries pick up the slack. However, when you don't have an enormous and technologically advanced military you tend to be a little more cautious with how you use it.

we'll see, the Arab League and the French are chomping at the bit to intervene. i'm fully convinced Sarkozy would have intervened in Libya regardless of what the U.S. did, wonder if he has the same investment in a less strategically significant nation.

Does the arab league have the logistical means and political courage to go it alone, though? Lybia makes me doubt on both counts.

    As for Sarkozy:
    - His motivation isn't altruistic. The Arab League might be interested in a more democractic middle-east & north Africa, but Sarkozy cares only about his own (and France's) glory.
    - The french don't have quite the same historical connection with the middle east as north Africa.
    - I'm not sure he has the political capita to commit to an intervention.
He'd rather get re-elected than play hero, this time; even though his chances are weak. Hollande probably will be less inclined to intervene on his own.
    - We're talking french military, here! They'll surrender before they start!
