When I first checked CNN right after the decision, it had a huge bold headline stating "mandate struck down". Now it's just a big bold "Upheld". Fucking media.

Yeah, I checked BG, then went to CNN as a legitimate news source to forward on to coworkers, and was mildly dumbfounded.

The GOP has already tweeted that the battle towards full repeal begins now! That's right, a vote for Romney is a vote against Obamacare!

The scary part of this ruling is that they ruled the Gov can do this becuase it's a tax. Basically this gives them the power to pass any law mandating you buy something or you have to pay a tax. Just off the top of my head it could have been used to help bail out the failed American Motor companies. You don't want to buy an American car? Well you can now pay a tax on that.

In all seriousness though, I don't care whether it was upheld or not politically. Each side would do what they want with it once a majority is reached regardless of what the SCOTUS says. I'm more concerned now it sounds like they've given a blank slate on what the legislature can say we need to purchase as long as its legally framed around a tax penalty.

Seriously though, with legal precedent, what is stopping congress from drafting legislation saying we must purchase broccoli grown here in the US or face a tax?

I'm honestly curious, not trying to be an asshole or fall into dumb arguments. Let's go even as far as saying because of the upheld ACA, with "product x's" numerous benefits towards continuing to decrease healthcare costs, why could congress not say we need to purchase it or face a tax?
