That is a cost calculation they will have to make. Why are economic decisions bad?

Do companies have to pay a fine every year or just once?

Since high(er)-risk customers mean more money out of their pockets, the sneaky bastards could just try to raise costs to compensate." Legality of collusion and such aside, this is an industry with no shortage of shady activities behind it. If there's a solid government healthcare option out there for everyone now aside from Medicare (despite its issues), then disregard my twitchiness on the fine/tax. If such a thing doesn't exist yet, or is outright worse than commercial versions (Thus doing nothing to reduce costs), think of it as my way of saying, "Hey, wait a sec..."

Are there any charts out there listing prices before and after Obomacare's signing back when? How about projections for x years from now with what's known of things at the moment? I wouldn't say minimum wage has exactly kept up with inflation or the volatile expenses of fuel, but a lot of people have to work these jobs or drive their own cars in absence of good public transportation. They're also the types that certainly need all of this most. So it just seems weird dumping a bill on them if something really isn't in place yet to support them until they're more financially well off, if ever.
I'm sure there's more reasons then this, but part of the law dictates insurance companies have to pay 80 or 90 percent of their income in coverage, leaving a small amount for over head. If that helps ease your worries.

Our health care is still for profit and we pay for it.

Ratatapa: Canada's system is what a lot of us here want. Single Payer system. The current system is a halfstep which tries to make it good for patients and health insurance providers. We still have the for-profit middleman except we don't have to pay them as much now and can't get denied for already being sick.

Husband back in November got laid off, but then got a new job two weeks later. However, that job didn't give him insurance until about two months ago. And guess what? Pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition. I had to be on cobra my whole pregnancy, and dealing with the switch made me not get to see a doctor for about three months during it.

If people don't think we needed a change, any change, they are retarded.

Also, every damn one of you who likes this NEEDS to vote for obama come election. I know he's made a lot of shitty moves, but getting him re-elected is the only way in helping to solidify this thing.
I was not aware that pregnancy could legally be labled be a pre-existing condition. I was under the idea that it was against the law. I found this link on google: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_hipaa.html

Are there illnesses or injuries that cannot be subject to a preexisting condition exclusion?

    Yes, as follows:

Pregnancy, even if the woman had no prior coverage before enrolling in her current employer's plan.
Conditions present in a newborn or a child under 18 who is adopted or placed for adoption (even if the adoption is not yet final), as long as the child is enrolled in health coverage within 30 days of birth, adoption, or placement for adoption. In addition, the child must not have a subsequent, significant break in coverage (defined as 63 days). For instance, a significant break might occur if a parent lost his job and health coverage for himself and his family shortly after a child’s birth. This break will be discussed below.
Genetic information. For example, if a woman is found to have a gene indicating she is at a higher risk for breast cancer, she cannot be denied coverage if there is no diagnosis of the disease.

I'd like to imagine that when the democratic campaign managers were watching Romney's reaction they were saying, 'We got that on tape, right?'

you have to look carefully at what it says. "before enrolling in her current employer's plan" you cannot be denied coverage going from a group plan to group plan (and cannot have a gap in coverage for more than 60 days), but there is no law against insurance companies denying preggos individual coverage. Blue Cross rep actually laughed at me when I called asking for some.

You are correct. However, one of the president's promises to the people (just like "this isn't a tax") was that this law would not force you to change insurance if you were covered under your employer. It's true, unless your employer decides to scrap your benefits.

I don't care either way, but it may be an unintended consequence, and blah blah blah people will complain.
