this is a really good explanation of the situation. i always felt repubs were just opposing anything that obama was trying to push forward, but never got the details.

Romney's health care bill is perceived as virtually the same thing as the widely detested Obamacare because it is virtually the same thing as the widely detested Obamacare.
Both Romneycare and Obamacare include the individual mandate. Both Romneycare and Obamacare include sharp increases in Medicaid. Both Romneycare and Obamacare include guaranteed issue and community rating (like requiring fire insurers to insure homes that have already caught fire, and at the same standard rates as for everyone else). Both Romneycare and Obamacare include welfare subsidies for the purchase of health insurance well into the middle class. And both Romneycare and Obamacare include the latent government power for price controls on health insurance and rationing of health care.

The problem is not that President Obama is a raging socialist/leftist/fascist trying to force a health care mandate on hapless stalwart Republicans. No, the problem is that the Republican party leadership has become so immoderate that President Obama’s obviously moderate Republican idea is no longer acceptable to them even though the contents of his legislation are, mostly, accepted by rank and file Republicans.

Just for comparison's sake, a couple of months ago I had to pay for a year's worth of medical coverage here in Korea. It was $160. That's not just my share of a larger bill largely being paid by my employer (I don't have an employer), that $160 was the whole bill. There are no restrictions on where I can or can't go to receive treatment. Co-pays are also relatively low. I caught the flu almost immediately after getting here and spent three days in the hospital. My co-pay was $50, and that included time in the hospital, medication received, and my prescription after being discharged. Clearly, the reason America's healthcare system is so fucking horrendous isn't because there aren't better models out there to follow.

I wonder what the correlation is between hospitals with high charges, and hospitals with high amounts of uncompensated (or undercompensated) care.

Hospitals that inflate their charges generally see more Medicare/Medicaid and Self-pay (i.e. No Pay) patients, forcing them to inflate those charges to cover the losses.
