The statute of limitations depends on what state you live in, but if your uncle has in fact abandoned the house and you are living there, you should be able to file a notice with the city/town letting them know you're living there now.
First thing this does is requires your uncle by law to provide water and electricity (though I guess you'd have to follow up on that, not sure if you have any intention of suing your uncle), but the other thing it does is make it so after a certain number of years pass, as long as you're in possession of the house, it becomes yours for whatever the cost of filing the paper with the city was (usually less than $20).
Adverse Possession - basically whoever is actually possessing the property gets to own it (eventually).
