You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I actually don't deny this, but I support him bringing up the issue which he didn't have to do at all. As a note, if you didn't quite get it when I linked the video, for the most part, I can't stand O'Reilly. But I'd feel a fool to not at least give him some credit when credit is due, for at least bringing up this issue. As far as I can tell, the way he did it is the same way his viewers eat shit up, so, again, it should do more good than harm.

I wasn't directing this to you. It was a general statement.

    EDIT:

Also, I like that he brought it up but he didn't push it like he pushes everything on his show, underwhelming to me.

He brought it up I think because he didn't like a group targeting a person over their lifestyle, which has no factor in her job or her duties performing her job. Seriously, she hasn't been leading a wave of her & her JCPenny bridal arrangements, so her personal life is a moot point to her professional demeanor.
The fact that he compared brought in McCarthyism metaphor as a negative when compared to conservative attacks on gays.....holy shit. I wouldn't have believed that to be on Fox News. He started to go farther but she (tried) to turn it back on him, and then it ended. He didn't bring himself up, she did @ the 4:14 mark.

Still though, Bill O'Reilly defending gays and portraying McCarthyism logic as bad? On fox news? I woke up in Bizaro land.

he defended all gays by saying their lifestyle is not sufficient cause for private groups to demand their resignation from public positions; that doing so is immoral, unamerican and reminiscent of McCarthyism and witch hunts

he didn't come out and say she is an ignorant bigot for holding those views

but still bravo billo no other anchor on Fox is gonna come out and say that

Thank you for saying what I'm thinking, but I'm confused now. It's coming across like some of you think he's the asshole, and not that twatwaffle he's talking to. Or am I reading subtext that isn't there?

You know, I may not agree on basically all of the morality related things republicans tend to espouse, but real the real republicans, the "you do what you want, and fuck everybody else" kind of republicans I actually have some respect for.

Did you not hear him when he specifically told the bigot that it is about Ellen, despite everything she's trying to say? On top of that, the woman went on by naming Ellen and elaborating about her personal lifestyle (despite her trying to contest O'Reilly's stating that it "is about Ellen" by claiming it wasn't, making her hypocrisy crystal-clear), and O'Reilly continued the argument. He knew that she was making it an attack on Ellen's character due to the fact that she lived a lifestyle they did not agree with, and an attack on Ellen's person, not to mention the fact that firing Ellen would damage her as an individual. The context is important.

I don't understand how you can't see this, and I agree with the others who are astounded by your inability to do so. As Andalusian Girls said, it defends all gays—which includes Ellen, naturally—and it certainly is commendable. Not only did he dispute the opinions of the bigoted woman, but he's fucking Bill O'Reilly, and he did it on his television show. He could've agreed with her, and it would not have harmed his ratings in any way, as—well, it's Fox News, I don't have to tell you why, do I? Yet he didn't agree, and instead outright defended a gay person's legal right to employment, and did it on a television broadcast that is watched by far more people than it should be.

That is most certainly important and commendable. I do not understand how this could be seen as anything less.

I thought the interview sucked. Maybe I don't watch O'Reilly enough, but I was under the impression that he was much more hard hitting that that. In my opinion, I've seen much much better interviews on The daily show lol. But at the same time, the very fact that he brought this issue up at all is Huge. And I do think he (or whoever made him do this interview) deserves credit for that. Any support at all (even if its just disagreeing with the other side, and not bringing up every single issue) is a good thing.

Also, I swear I'm going to start shopping at JCPenny now. Not because they have Ellen promoting them. Not because they are sorta sticking up for gays. But because they had the balls to tell these people to fuck off when they tried to pressure them.

Your final sentence explains why the interview is significant. Certainly, O'Reilly wasn't a blistering bastard while talking to this woman, but he couldn't be—he has a paycheck to earn and cash, after all. However, the mere fact that he opposed her at all, even if in a friendlier manner than he'd normally oppose someone, is the important part. This is what makes the interview important.

To believe that a well-known public figure must complete a 180 and argue on the opposite side of things instantly is extremely unrealistic. It's also unfair. Even baby steps can be big steps.

Agree with Kohan 100%. I think you guys are missing the point and thinking it was a pointless interview because O'Reilly didn't make it amazing. You have to realize the amount of people who eat his shit up and follows anything he says. Whether he "specifically said" blah blah blah or not, the reality is, the way the interview went watchers of the show are going to see O'Reilly as supporting Ellen, and they will support her, too. Regardless of any ulterior motives/underlining themes O'Reilly was getting at. I mean, honestly, do you think the average viewer of his show is going to think, "oh this is just about citizens united"? No, they're going to see it and be like "huh, O'Reilly supports Ellen. I want to go to JCP too!"

Best thing that came out about all this is it probably helped boost sales for JCP because of the controversy.

I'd contend you have it backwards. This benefits O'Reilly way more than it does Ellen, since O'Reilly knows that to alienate an audience like Ellen's, even if it's only a percentage, is a dumb move. Defending Ellen means that, to Ellen viewers, O'Reilly is a good guy. This was evidenced when Ellen played the O'Reilly clip and thanked him publicly on her show.

I mean, you only have to look at O'Reilly's insane assualt on Pepsi when they made Ludacris a spokesman.

    But I'm just a cynic.
