I don't think people are surprised, so much as saddened this still exists.

Believe it or not, there are religious people out there (myself included) who understand the simple concept of, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." It being a sin is irrelevant (and it being a "major sin" is easily debatable). Going 66mph in a 65mph zone is a sin, too.

Ironically Christians aren't supposed to be judging others. That is assuming they follow Jesus Christ, which they aren't, henceforth they are not being Christians. Doesn't matter what doctrine says; Christians are supposed to show love and let God judge. Other religions? No idea. This country is a cesspool of fuck.

People only focus on that little retarded portion and tend to forget all the "don't pass judgement, love thy neighbor" part.

Nobody in this thread is expressing surprise. What's your point?

Only thing im questioning though, 10% of straight kids attempt suicide? and 33% of gay kids? That seems way higher than I ever would have thought. Out of all the people I know (i know i know, anecdotal evidence doesnt mean shit, and im also aware maybe i just wasnt informed about others) only 2 people I knew have committed suicide, and only 1 more has attempted. There was one other girl from my town that committed suicide, but I didn't know her.
dunno about straight kid suicide rates, but around 33% of gay kids sounds about right, since from an old statistic i remember it was around 4 times as high for gay kids... But it's quite possible it's gotten worse. Hell, i almost contemplated suicide myself when i was their age from being gay, and pretty much the only thing that stopped me was my fear of death that outweighed the misery i was going through.

It's a major sin because sin is defined by centuries old mythology. Faith, is a character flaw, not something to be respected.

Like Brittany, eighth-grader Samantha Johnson was a husky tomboy too, outgoing with a big smile and a silly streak to match Brittany's own. Sam was also bullied for her look – short hair, dark clothing, lack of girly affect – but she merrily shrugged off the abuse. When Sam's volleyball teammates' taunting got rough – barring her from the girls' locker room, yelling, "You're a guy!" – she simply stopped going to practice. After school, Sam would encourage Brittany to join her in privately mocking their tormentors, and the girls would parade around Brittany's house speaking in Valley Girl squeals, wearing bras over their shirts, collapsing in laughter. They'd become as close as sisters in the year since Sam had moved from North Dakota following her parents' divorce, and Sam had quickly become Brittany's beacon. Sam was even helping to start a Gay Straight Alliance club, as a safe haven for misfits like them, although the club's progress was stalled by the school district that, among other things, was queasy about the club's flagrant use of the word "gay." Religious conservatives have called GSAs "sex clubs," and sure enough, the local religious right loudly objected to them. "This is an assault on moral standards," read one recent letter to the community paper. "Let's stop this dangerous nonsense before it's too late and more young boys and girls are encouraged to 'come out' and practice their 'gayness' right in their own school's homosexual club."

Even when kids tried to find ways to protect themselves, anti-gay conservatives denied them even a place to rest from the abuse.

So, the question is, is anyone going to stand out on a picket line and chant "God Hates Blowjobs?"

No joke, when I was engaged we went to this Catholic Encounter Weekend where they gave us a book about Catholicism and sex. It said it was ok for a guy to finger his wife so she can orgasm if she didn't when he did (which is the ultimate goal) because her orgasming afterwards won't effect her getting pregnant.

I made sure my husband read that part.

This is why you should recognize organized religion as nothing but a control mechanism, renounce your catholocism, and become a deist, if you want to believe in god still.

It is believable. Generally in the training pipelines you see anywhere from 2-10 suicides a year on average (actually go through with it and accomplish it) and a lot more attempts. Of course, my experience to this is people that are 18-25 doing it, so might not be accurate on par with the 'kids' part - depends on your defining line.

Though Bachmann doesn't live within Anoka-Hennepin's boundaries anymore, she has a dowdier doppelgänger there in the form of anti-gay crusader Barb Anderson. A bespectacled grandmother with lemony-blond hair she curls in severely toward her face, Anderson is a former district Spanish teacher and a longtime researcher for the MFC who's been fighting gay influence in local schools for two decades, ever since she discovered that her nephew's health class was teaching homosexuality as normal. "That really got me on a journey," she said in a radio interview. When the Anoka-Hennepin district's sex-ed curriculum came up for re-evaluation in 1994, Anderson and four like-minded parents managed to get on the review committee. They argued that any form of gay tolerance in school is actually an insidious means of promoting homosexuality – that openly discussing the matter would encourage kids to try it, turning straight kids gay.

Some people view their own sense of personal hope and security as superior to the rights of others. I know of a few friends who were perfectly fine with gays, then found church, then Jesus, and now have a problem with gays. Its not surprising.

This. I found out an old friend of mine "found Jesus" recently and his diatribe to me about the downfall of culture via homosexuality actually scared me. I was physically sick that someone could 1) change that much so quickly 2) actually believe that.

In someways I am I guess, but the reason I continue to associate myself with Catholicism is because while I disagree with a lot of what they believe, I still agree with a lot. For one, they are one of the few of the Christian sects that believe the Bible should be taken figuratively rather than literally. I still believe in Jesus, that he was the Messiah, and a lot of his teachings among other things which would make me more than just a deist.

I know a lot of people don't see it, but I guess I was lucky where I grew up in CT, because I knew a lot of Catholics, but we all seem to have the same idea of "keep your faith, but keep your mouth shut" in that don't push your beliefs on others, don't judge, and remember doing good deeds isn't remotely limited to other Christians. It seems like this breed of Catholic is rare, but they do exist, I swear.
