Yeah, she is. She's saddled with maybe an hour of chores. You really want to know what I had to do to earn my allowance when growing up?

Not that I hate what I did. I'm actually grateful to my parents and they know. Most of the inheritance is to me for good reason.

ITT: Being even a tiny bit spoiled means you haven't grown up at all since you were 15.

No, i don't, because it's not relevant. I don't really care about your anecdotes.

That dude seemed like an overbearing douche to me. Maybe it's just the southern thing, but getting that upset over some profanity and perceived "disrespect" is ridiculous. We also have no idea who is "more" correct in their version of the story. However, if the girl is even remotely close to telling the truth with all the things she's expected to do, she is fully within her right to get annoyed with being disparaged by saying "you don't have a job and are therefore lazy" when she is apparently doing the equivalent of work and school already.
Perceived Disrespect? You mean the blatant disrespect. How in the world can you see it in any other way? Also a few chores is by no means comparable with a paid job, they have a maid that does most of the chores anyway. He goes on to list the reasons of this laziness, she was given a laptop which was upgraded, food, shelter, and most likely an allowance. This is the problem with Spoiled kids/adults, they think everything should be handed to them by those that do all the work. Hopefully this father can fix that before it permanently sets in with his daughter.

Also, his explanation of the daily list of chores makes me highly suspicious that he is a mega-douche. She's been gone at school all day, but if the people at home have made a mess on the counters, she's expected to clean it up. Are the people who made said mess incapable of cleaning up after themselves? It'd be one thing if she was going around trashing the house, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
You are either playing devils advocate or just failing to see the reasons behind these chores. These Chores from the father makes him a responsible parent. She is not a princess that everyone needs to wait hand and foot on her so she can have an easy life.

I take neither side in this argument, I am simply very skeptical that he is being completely truthful (his description of everything he was doing when he was 15, for instance).
It's already clear which side you're on, also its very commonplace to have college credits while in high school, hell some kids graduate high school with an Associates degree. I started working in a mechanics shop at the age of 15, which taught me how to take care/fix vehicles. Its not to hard to imagine a hard upbringing.

People who had it easy growing up tend to have a harder time to cope with the harshness that is the real world.

If she doesn't want to clean up, she can start paying rent for staying in the house. The guy might come off as a douche, but that's tough parenting and i'm all for it. Look around you today and all you see are a bunch of self entitled babies bitching about how they never get what they want. Those chores are nothing, and if she can't be bothered to even do that, as a sign of respect for her parents and their putting food on the table, paying for her school and a roof over her head, then fuck her laptop.

It was a spectacle, but not overboard. Like that senator who beat his mentally challenged kid - that's just dumb.

    So many hippie cry babies.
Just wait 'till they have kids who drive them nuts. It's all fun and games on the other side of the DSL until it's in your face 24/7.

Disciplining kids is becoming a lost art.

    All right then.

I guess I'll have to accept your perceived notion of tough love is some sorta abuse. GOD FORBID any child being saddled with some house chores to go along with things like school. If she was in the right as you're implying, all it takes is a phone call to family services. She should be ecstatic by being removed from her parents house from her tone.

hey believes that anything outside of jerking your children off while feeding them cotton candy and telling them they are great is abuse and will post links that don't really support what he's saying to prove it.

can avoid the whole discussion by bumping any previous thread that mentions parents and children or by ignoring his opinions about parents and children.

I guess I'm just weird because I don't automatically believe or disbelieve something a person says solely because of age. Neither the parent nor the "child" has more credibility than the other in my book. Everyone here seems to think the parent is automatically right, because parents "are always right" or some such nonsense. Chances are they're both exaggerating the fuck out of the situation.

Oh it probably is. But it still doesn't change the fact on what she wrote and how she posted it on facebook. Family matter should've been family matter. Talking about face to face with a friend is normal, but to do it openly like that on a social site? WTF is wrong with the daughter? I highly believe the father made the video to give her a taste of her own medicine. Classic disciplining tool that's pretty effective.

Any kid in that region is well aware that their father has a gun and knows how to use it.
any use of violence is an implied threat, and also teaches that violent measures are a good form of conflict resolution

you're missing my point entirely if you think I care it was a gun

We know nothing about how locked down her privacy settings are, or if she posted it to a select group of friends. You clearly don't have an issue with her venting about something she's unhappy about, you just dislike the medium, but you don't know enough about how the medium was used to make a fair judgment.

Also, the "family matter should've been a family matter" is a little unreasonable. There are a *ton* of things that, while family matters, are so fucked up that they must be shared with others.

The Dad actually posted his Facebook on the YouTube video and he is giving his daughter an interview with Social Services to prove to them she is fine and not being mistreated. He has several posts about the topic where he answers questions from the media and some random posts, he called out some people who were talking shit about his daughter too.

Sounds like a pretty solid guy tbh. Maybe you guys should read everything else he has said before acting like he is some asshole. He's actually kind of funny.

edit: his Facebook if any is lazy. http://www.facebook.com/tommyjordaniii

The dad did say she blocked her parents, no?

I don't have a problem with kids venting, we all did it. But yes, I don't like how she did it and what she said. To call your parents slave drivers and insult them like that...even when angry at my parents when I was younger, I didn't cross that line. She needs/needed a rude awakening. Children her age who are serious about what they say usually just pack up and leave.

One of my friends moved out when he was 16. All you gotta do is have your parents sign a form saying you're allowed to live on your own and the government rubber stamps it (where I live anyways). She obviously doesn't have the drive to do that because to some degree, she knows how good she has it.

It's not hard to see why most people are taking the parents side. One, he said he already warned her before not to pull shit like that again. Two, she insults them publicly. Three, it sounds like she's only saddled with an hour worth of chores. WTF does she need 5+hours everyday to do homework for?

    When I was a teenager...

    - Had to mow the lawn 2-4 times a week. Stupid rain made it grow like three inches.
    - No riding lawn mower.
    - Very little shade on the lawn, usually 85-95 in the summer.
    - Mayflies, mosquitos, horseflies and fucking yellow jackets galore.
    - Lawn took about 3 hours to fully mow.
    - Had to do this even after school.

    - Had to shovel the driveway after snowstorms.
    - Took an hour for light snow (less than 6 inches), but up to four hours for the shitty heavy/wet snow, if there was more than a foot.
    - Gravel driveway meant you couldn't just fully attack it. You had to be careful.
    - No snow blower. Just a shovel.

Didn't get paid for it, but I didn't really complain (much). I think the most upset I got was when I was like 12... my friend and I made $150 each on the previous snowstorm shoveling driveways, but on the next one, I was told I couldn't go out to make money until our own driveway was done. My friend was like "lol, fuck that jazz" and went off and made money with another friend. I was kinda pissed.

Still, I think I had it pretty good as teenager, despite the shitty yard work.

Kinda had a funny relationship with my stepdad... He initially overreacted to a lot of stuff (nothing violent, just kinda over the top lectures, etc)... one time I ran cable into my room when I was 14... my mom found out and told him. His initial reaction was "I'll fucking kill him..." - Then he inspected my handiwork and told my mom, "wow, he actually did a really good job..."

From his Facebook, most of you wanted to know her response:
Q: How did your daughter respond to the video and to what happened to her laptop?

A: She responded to the video with “I can’t believe you shot my computer!” That was the first thing she said when she found out about it. Then we sat and we talked for quite a long while on the back patio about the things she did, the things I did in response, etc.

Later after she’d had time to process it and I’d had time to process her thoughts on the matters we discussed, we were back to a semi-truce… you know that uncomfortable moment when you’re in the kitchen with your child after an argument and you’re both waiting to see which one’s going to cave in and resume normal conversation first? Yeah, that moment. I told her about the video response and about it going viral and about the consequences it could have on our family for the next couple of days and asked if she wanted to see some of the comments people had made. After the first few hundred comments, she was astounded with the responses.

People were telling her she was going to commit suicide, commit a gun-related crime, become a drug addict, drop out of school, get pregnant on purpose, and become a stripper because she’s too emotionally damaged now to be a productive member of society. Apparently stripper was the job-choice of most of the commenters. Her response was “Dude… it’s only a computer. I mean, yeah I’m mad but pfft.” She actually asked me to post a comment on one of the threads (and I did) asking what other job fields the victims of laptop-homicide were eligible for because she wasn’t too keen on the stripping thing.

We agreed we learned two collective lessons from this so far:

First: As her father, I’ll definitely do what I say I will, both positive and negative and she can depend on that. She no longer has any doubt about that.

Second: We have always told her what you put online can affect you forever. Years later a single Facebook/MySpace/Twitter comment can affect her eligibility for a good job and can even get her fired from a job she already has. She’s seen first-hand through this video the worst possible scenario that can happen. One post, made by her Dad, will probably follow him the rest of his life; just like those mean things she said on Facebook will stick with the people her words hurt for a long time to come. Once you put it out there, you can’t take it back, so think carefully before you use the internet to broadcast your thoughts and feelings.

One of my favorite comments from them; She read comments and asked her Dad to post this one.

After seeing his facebook and a few other things from him (and her), he seems like a pretty good father and she seems like a pretty normal daughter.

Despite the .45, move along people nothing to see here.
