What is a Gainax ending?

A normal story about buying bread:

You go the store. You buy some bread. You eat that bread.

A story about buying bread with a Gainax ending:

You go to the store. You buy some bread. The bread represents Adam and your stomach represents Eve and everything falls apart and your parents hate each other and the ocean and the rain represents God peeing on humanity forever and why are there clips of stock footage of shellfish mating in this bread and why was I born and WHAT THE FUCK IT ALL JUST WENT BLACK BEFORE ANYONE EVEN ATE THE GODDAMN BREAD?

Funny that people call it Gainax ending seeing as how I can only think of two instances off the top of my head (Eva of course, and FLCL but you might as well say that entire show was a really long Gainax ending).

Though, in Chrono Cross's case the Gainax ending was actually kind of warranted given some of the themes the game had. In actual Gainax endings it feels out of fucking nowhere.

Oh yeah, I didn't see it mentioned yet: Chrono Trigger and Cross were both written by the same guy (Masato Kato). If you recognize that name, he also wrote the three first mini-addons and the original/ROTZ stories. The guy's been screwed over by SquareEnix at pretty much every turn since Chrono Cross. They have a history of doing that with their people with actual talent (See: Yasumi Matsuno).

Righto, on topic. Don't see anything making me want to resubscribe yet. Oh well. Neo-Nyzul doesn't sound that bad when you consider the idea behind assault (Only takes 30 minutes, it was supposed to be the "casual" endgame when it was conceived), but it's not enough to make me want to play again.

Panty&Stocking

Spoiler: show

Stocking kill Panty at the very last second of the last episode. You could say it was just gainax poking fun at its own ending, but it doesn't make it any less of a "wtf"

About the same as FLCL in 12 episodes instead of 6. The ending was less abrupt, but still very open and you're never sure what you watched

Panty & Stocking also ended saying it would be continued in Season 2, then Gainax said there are no plans for season 2. Then the soundtrack has the VAs (in-character) talking about being dragged into a second season. They're trolling their fans with that.

Yeah didn't the creator spin off his own studio and take most of his staff with him?
