As stated earlier, people using manual positioning with clipper are getting ported across the zone in weird ways when they use it and you can no longer go through walls with it(Maint mode is still good though). I wonder if SE rigged it so that now when it detects something it deems as 'pos hacking' the server adds more 'inertia' to the pos hack and makes you overshoot by a an extra and, more importantly, a precise distance. I figure a lot of people could get away with small pos hacks here and there and pass it off as a server hickup or lag(people who lag badly sometimes get autoflagged for pos hacking) and you can give the appearance of pos hacking by rapidly inserting and disconnecting your ethernet cable.(people used to in ballista, to make them 'teleport' around). I wonder however, if now when you pos hack the server blasts you to a random part of the map(which is kinda does now)if the distance is precise. If it's a precise number of yalms, maybe it's easier for them to detect pos hackers. Pos hackers could pass off before as server/lag hick ups if they did it once in a while, nothing would seem unusual to SE. But if SE sees a bunch of players post patch randomly teleporting to parts of the map in increments that they set, (for example, 72.4 yalms) it would be easier for them to distinguish people using third party programs when they see distance jumps in increments of 72.4 or whatever value it is. Someone should test that shit on the test server and see if they're getting tossed around at the same interval of distance.

This is pretty much how I feel about FFXI's spaghetti/hacked-together/raw programming in general.

It's such an old game and the programmers who work for SE now probably werent the ones who wrote prior codes for it. Probably why random shit happens sometimes like adjusting synthesis and Vrtra pops outside, or adjusting VW difficulty and undead take capped damage from cures.

If their detection code was smart enough to find you hacking at all, why would it need to 'blast' you anywhere other than Mordion Gaol. Makes no sense that they would do such a thing.

Probably because the server/client relationship still has no rollback function on your position, so they can't just start jailing any weird movement because of either people cheating, or people R0ing like a mofo.

Granted, the lack of rubberbanding was probably the only reason the game even worked on dial-up back in the day.

The very implementation of dead reckoning is what made the game work on dial-up back in the day, allowing the server to predict your next movement based on an array of your previous coordinates, V92 data transfer wasn't reliable enough to allow movement to be done without it - even today the game would be jittery as all hell without dead reckoning. I'm pretty sure they could roll back your coordinates a few seconds or recorded coordinates previous - but yeah, you're right there is no evidence of them ever doing this.

Still this makes no sense when applied to the suggested theory:

    Step1. Catch someone hacking
Step2. Move them clear across the other side of the zone.

If Step1 is true, Step2 seems pointless.... but then this is SE we're talking about.

Did any MMOs prior to XI use movement prediction at all?

I'm not fluent with games around that era (DAoC, Anarchy Online, EQ1, etc) other than Ultima Online, where that one had to pre-authorize any movement before you moved on your end, which was annoying as fuck when I played it for a month back on dial-up times. Granted that was a 2d game also where you could just click where you want to go, so it's a bit of a different story vs. free 3d movement.

If you got it in Neo Nyzul, since that's the thread you're posting in, I'd assume yes they did up the drop rate!

Not sure about MMO's prior to FFXI, but any (free moving) networked game needs to use some form of dead reckoning, even if only primitive. The other option would be a jittery-mess and no smooth movement at all - and this requires the previous couple of coordinates/heading to be saved.

Doing our first run since the update in a few hours.. Is the general consensus right now to just go vanilla, or are people still risking lamp dats and using clipper?

My group has only been using movement, to be safe-ish.

safe doesnt seem to fit bro. thought it was common knowledge that its typically easier to detect movement speed then .dat mods, providing your people / you arent telling / bragging.

Especially since your position gets reported to server every second now, not to catch flee-hackers, but so you'll stop bumping into people who haven't moved in 10 seconds.

So, my group just did 2 runs. Second run we had 4 order lamp floors. Three of them we got right the first time and had a 2 floor jump each time. Last one we got wrong first try then completed and got a 7 floor jump. Paranoid? Coincidence? We decided to stop for now after this run..

How can you possibly get 3/4 correct guess without dats change ? Dummy npcs were a trap to record cheaters.
