Meh, I have a female and male cat that have eating issues. We used to have dry food out of the cats all the time, but they were getting overweight so we had to put both cats on a diet. When feeding the cats wet or dry food, the Male cat will go in and eat from both of the food bowls and pushes our female cat out of the way. Whenever the male cat isn't around (he generally eats till hes satisfied) she will eat frantically all that she can. The female cat is almost always begging for food. Its been about a year since we put them both on a diet, the Male cat has actually lost a lot of weight (he goes outside and is fairly active) while our female cat has just gotten super lazy (I try to get her to play with a string cat toy, she used to jump all around, now she just lays in one place and bats at it if its close enough). We are feeding them the amount the vet has told us to so they can loose weight, but it isn't working for at least one of them.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards Blue Buffalo. From all the reviews I have read, I have not come across a bad one yet. A bit pricier, but if BB will help with their weight management and hairball control, I figure it's worth it.
ya I have one cat who is a little pudgy, but she seems built to be that way. Both my cats are indoor and I use blue. Make sure you buy the type specifically for indoor cats.

As for exercise (@ anyone with fatties a.k.a. richardd): taking them for walks is good mentally because of the fresh air, but as someone says, you don't actually "walk" the cat. One of my cats loves the leash (she fucking runs and sits and gets ready to have it put on whenever she sees me take it out) but still the "walking" is basically me taking her outside while she wanders aimlessly smelling shit, jumping on bees and scratching a few trees. Not really weight-loss inducing.

The best weight loss I've found is simple. Laser pointer. I don't think there's a cat that exists that won't go fucking nuts trying to chase the dot. For indoors it's more important to make sure they are doing activities like that. Get one basically at any pet store/walmart/target/etc. and try to play with your cats a little bit everyday. Sometimes people don't realize how much attention they need to give cats considering how independent they come off to be.

Other good toys are things like the fishing poles and have them jump and chase them. If you get lucky, some cats actually like to play fetch (my fatty loves to chase after her toy mice...she doesn't bring them back though )

Edit: also, if you don't have a cat water fountain, get one. They definitely will drink more water because it's keeping it aired/fresh. And more water in their system = less food they'll be eating.

Absolute truth. We got one of these fountains, and both of them go nuts for it.

He buys a new cat every time the old one pisses him off. It's a vicious cycle.

haha, and that's fine. They don't need to work out like we work out. And too, this is probably the most exercise he's had in awhile. When he gets bored, it's ok to stop and do it another day. As long as he's getting more activity than he used to before. As well try to get other "chasing" toys as cats are like people in that they can get bored So, it's good to mix things up.

And again, I stress the water fountain. They really will drink more using one of those, and that will help with weight loss (and overall health).

I swear, if I hadn't met the hubby I was going to end up being one of those old ladies with like 50 cats.

This is what I expected for myself also ^^; Never been much of a socialite, my pets have always been the best company.

On subject, my cats take care of their exercise on their own mostly, playing and chasing each other around every day, usually in the middle of the night when they can knock things down and wake us up >.>

To be honest, I would recommend dry food. yes, it doesn't taste as good, but the good kind is actually more healthy than the wet kind. Just leave a big bowl out and they'll eat when they get hungry. It's close to impossible for a cat to get fat on the dry kind, too.

If you want to use the wet kind anyway, put the food down on set times. If she doesn't eat, put it away. Don't place it somewhere only she can reach, put it away completely and serve it again next time. She'll quickly catch on that she has to eat the food when it is available.

As for the male cat, you do know they automatically gain weight when they get neutered, right? They also get more lazy. It's part of life without balls. I don't know of a single male cat that isn't a bit chubby and loves to sleep. Even my outdoor male cat is a bit on the chubby side.
