If this is indeed their master plan to generate hype for Vanafest they probably don't want to spoil much more than "hey, we're adding a bunch of new areas".
If it's all true we'll see the true zones next week or at least some of them.

The precedents they've set stick me firmly in the 'maybe they'll announce an expansion, doubt it'll be any good' camp.

Though, they still picked those textures over others. If they were intending the city to be a Kazham-esque "primitive structure" setting, I would've thought they would pick something closer to it than San d'Oria. Easier to get a feel for what is being planned in a mock up zone like this if it's close to the final product instead of very far off.

And, one thing, if those are the state of the zones now (or even a month or two ago) whenever the part of the data was (accidentally?) greenlit to go in an update we might not see much of anything at Vana'fest.

I doubt that if past years are an indication of what to expect. They make an announcement of new add-spansion (cwutidid), with a vague title name, and a vague piece of gross artwork to go with it... and they WON'T say anything else. Then die-hard fans will fill in with their personal hopes and dreams, and drive the hype themselves.

Remember how everyone wanted Tavnazia out of Wings? Remember how everyone wanted Tavnazia out of Crystaline Prophecy? Remember how everyone wanted Tavnazia out of Abyssea? Remember how everyone wanted Tavnazia out of Voidwatch? Doomed to repeat history indeed.

Then players will argue about how its clearly an add-spansion for the South, because the title is orange, and orange is irrefutibly a tropical color. Or how one of the vaguely taru things is holding a cudgel with a dragon head-kind of thing, which clearly means its a far West add-spansion. Etc.

Well they usually have at least a trailer ready and some info. And I'm not saying that's how the zones look now, I'm saying they probably loaded some early models for us to find and speculate.
Iirc in the past the expansion packs were usually announced before Vanafests and then they had more to show off there. In this case the announcement would be at the event unless they post something on POL before then.

I mean, presumably they could have just finally rebuilt their city, rather than continue to live in their shitty caves. After all, Jeuno did open up trade with them during CoP and I would assume they have some worthwhile goods. The expansions aren't supposed to be simultaneous events in an arbitrary timeline, even though we can do them in any order we please. If I remember correctly, CoP is supposed to take place a few years after RoZ.

That said, I'm not really buying into it being Tavnazia, nor do I particularly want it to be.

Definitly. I always assumed Eald'narche's starting of the crystal line (with the intent to make the Meltdown happen again) was what woke Bahamut and started pulling Lumoria back to Vana'diel.

Anyway, after giving it more thought I'm putting my money on the city being Aldiaine, the homeland of the Elvaan before they came to the Quon continent. Valaineral R Davilles, the campaign general, was from there.

I vaguely remember the teaser site for CoP stating that it was "X-years following the events of Rise of the Zilart," but I could be wrong.

Why would anyone wanna see Tavnazia? Who gives a shit, lets see a new continent with new mob types etc. I do wonder what type of mobs they haven't added yet though? I know it was .dat mined that there was a mole thing and some other new mobs a few updates back if I recall.

The new mobs looked more Far-Northish, but even the unfinished zones make it quite obvious that the expansion won't be there.

If player activity isn't the direct result of the zone changing, then I'd say not really. Otherwise opens the "SE are lazy fucks" door by technically releasing yet more incomplete content, which has been a sticking point for their boxed expansions for some.

Back in the olden times (around the end of CoP) I really wanted a system where you could reclaim Tavnazia and rebuild it as the story progressed. First clearing out the beastmen from each of the zones (kind of Dynamis style), then a big-ass BC fight, then start trying to get people to move there, getting supplies that evolve it from wasteland to working city, etc. Sadly, it would have never worked because they don't like to build expansions on top of expansions, and would require multiple versions of the same zone in the dats.. At this point Tavnazia is so enshrined in myth that if they ever put out real zones for it, people would invariably be disappointed by it.

Lots of people where incredibly hung up on no Tavnazia in CoP. It's a common lament from that expansion, and the looks here are similar enough for that nostalgia to gloss over why it wouldn't necessarily be as good as somewhere new.

As someone else said, we've romanticized the city to the point where it can't possibly live up to our expectations. Especially given the current state of development. After taking in that viewpoint, and reflecting how 1: WoTG labored through 2009 and the first part of 2010 and 2:it was followed by the explosion of development that accompanied Abyssea and 3: 2011 was a doldrums of content outside of voidwatch which I freaking hated; I'll be glad if its not Tavnazia.

My money's on the Mithran continent to the south, if it is an expansion.
