Abyssea came completely out of left field and saved FFXI. Masui has earned a little faith from me.

I wish the best to Tanaka as a person, I respect him from being part of FFXI but it allways seemed like his old ideas were a burden that kept the game from evolving, changes were allways made late and not good enough.

On the other hand I had a blast with Abyssea so I think Matsui has a great idea to how evolve the game for the better, its true that Abyssea was "Mad fun while breaking the game", so some things have been lost with all the Abyssea madness, I really miss good old fashioned party/traditional xp and Abyssea really destroyed it, its true that old party system had some very bad things but damn I miss them, Im sure they could have done some things to tweak it.

Its been a year out of FFXI so I know very little of post-90 VW era, but looking forward if I have some time to mess a bit with the next expansion under Matsui hands.

The expansion was good but not enough to bring me back, this news? I'm going back to FFXI.

I hated his work of late but I hope the illness thing was a lie, it's hard to be so happy under those kinds of circumstances. I think it's a lie cause it would be just way to embarrassing to be fired off 2 games in such a short time.

Says you, many believe otherwise. To me Abyssea was the best of times this game has offered in the 8 years I've played it, screw 2 am Einherjars, years to get salvage gear, or DI/SW/FAF trash. Not only the content but the level of subscriber feedback that was listened to during that time was epic.

The only failure with Abyssea in my eyes was the entry level was too low to enter (should of been 75+ only) and they went too high with the level cap, 99 was too high and made most of it silly easy.

I highly doubt West is gonna be set up like Abyssea anyway. Abyssea was a mini-expansion that was used to keep us busy from 75-99. We're back at endgame now, new director or not, they need to keep us grinding again (just hopefully not as much as it used to be).

Tanaka leaving doesn't make me jump for joy (due to his illness), but what it does do is make me think FFXI now has a chance to progress further, which is what a lot of people wanted, even during the pre-Abyssea days.

If I didn't preorder GW2 I'd consider coming back fulltime, but with my MMO buddy constantly fapping to GW2 to the point of me wanting to kick him in the face it'd most likely just be me getting all jobs to 99 and stopping there.

I was never one of those super hardcore need the best of the best gear for all forms of every asset of every job people though so I dont know much of anything about what negative effect he had on XI lul

I would still love the grind and HNM camping if it did not take as long. If they bring back the camping and all, but upped the Drop rate, I would be fine with doing it again. I got to hang out

It's kind of a downer, considering the event is designed to hype up the game and get people excited about it again. It's not called announcement-fest. I suppose that if you feel his departure will be celebrated by the fans (which it ironically seems to be), it was the appropriate venue.

if you want to call it self-indulgent, he probably deserves it anyway, being the producer for the game for 10 years.
if you want to call it a downer, it was intentionally left to the end of the festival, so festivities had pretty much drawn to a close.
i'm totally fine with anything with regards to FFXI being announced there really. what I didn't like was that they used a segment of vanafest to plug XIV 2 years ago. I can understand where they're coming from.. but its not called vanafest for nothing.

That news may cause me to not actually quit.

As far as content, you just need to do what every other game does.

Progressive raids -> Raid1 gear required to beat Raid2 (gear) required to beat Raid3 etc. Continue releasing better gear and harder mobs, make it a 6 person limit, no 2hours, fix enmity system, dated game becomes relevant.

The game would need to be revamped from the ground up for this to be possible. Even if they put a lot of work into balancing classes/nerfing broken stuff (embrava, etc), combat in this game is just too fucking random. Hugely variable pdif rolls/multi-attacks/crits (for both players and monsters), unavoidable resists/misses, the mobs choice of TP move, etc. RNG plays a much bigger role than minor gear differences as it is.
