Could you imagine all these lawyers who are involved in the concussion cases against the league saying "well, if the league really cared about player safety then why did you allow a coach back into the league who is on record wanting a specific players ACL targeted?" No way Goodell can allow him back after this audio without looking like a complete hypocrite. If Williams is allowed back into the league it now creates an infinite loop that every legal case can point to asking that same question of if the league cared about safety then he should of never been allowed back into the league.

Goodell needs his testimony still to punish the individual players involved, I imagine he'll promise reinstatement at the very least but he doesn't have to deliver. This whole audio thing really hurts the Saints in trying to appeal though, this isn't something you can easily spin. And it probably helps Brees in trying to get a contract.

In my opinion, the audio doesn't really hurt the Saints as bad as Williams because none of the people appealing were in the room when that audio was taken. I assume that Payton's defense is going to be that he is an offensive minded head coach and he didn't realize the extent because he is at the offensive meeting and not the defensive. That or something else that is probably a load of bull as well. The Brees contract needs to happen or he will leave. If he leaves over something so stupid on the Saints' part, New Orleans would flip out and riot.
