Football needs to make money to pay for the tens of millions in civil suits that Penn State is about to pony up. Also, death penalty is for repeat offenders. Also, they violated no NCAA rules (no, not even "lack of institutional control"). The NCAA penalizing Penn State would be reinforcing the idea that the NCAA overreaches far too much than it should.

I avoided talking about it alot when the shit went down, but I still dunno how anyone can really feel bad for Penn State, it's not like 1 guy covered it up by himself. Everyone was involved, including higher ups. If SMU can get the death penalty for money changing hands, covering up an obscene number of rapes should have the same effect. Just because they didn't target players doesn't mean it shouldn't be an NCAA violation, I'm sure we can agree some of these incidents happened in the facility over a period of time, and the administration was not acting in the best interest of the school or the program. Otherwise we're just sending the message that it's ok to rape kids as long as we don't rape a player and make 1 person the fall guy, and then he dies so people think its not ok to feel bad. I like Michael Jackson's music but I don't refrain from saying he touched little boys even though he's dead.

How a large amount of people with knowledge of the incidents aren't being charged and thrown in jail is bullshit. Between this and the NCAA Basketball stuff, in recent years it's becoming harder to give a shit about college sports for me. Seeing blatant corruption on that level that makes most of the shit that happens in the NFL tame is a travesty.

Worst of all the sanctimonious penn state alumni who think the real victim here is joepa. If the death penalty doesn't apply to an issue like this it shouldn't exist.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished. I'm saying they didn't break any NCAA violations, the NCAA has no business being involved. The 5 guys involved are dead or going to be in jail for the rest of their lives. That's way worse than anything the NCAA could do.

I seriously doubt some assistant coach they hired 4 years ago or the current kids on the football team knew about a coverup from 14 years ago. There is no reason to push them.

When a team gets sanctions the kids are given waivers to transfer and play next year.

If this isn't a lack of institutional control they should change the fucking definition. Joepa ran that school

The fact that the administration was going to go to the police after the shower incident, but first wanted to tell Jerry about, but only after talking to Joe, but then suddenly do nothing after talking to Joe. Proves to most people that they were going to tamper with the investigation, but Joe convinced them to just cover it up.

Lack of institutional control refers to the programs adherance to NCAA bylaws. Rape isn't a bylaw. It's mostly compliance measures and taking action and reporting a violation when you know something has happened (which is why schools sanction themselves). The NCAA will have to rewrite rules to penalize Penn State.

Yes, the AD and VP were jailed before Sandusky was ever charged iirc.

Curley, Shultz and spanier as of right now are charged with perjury. The charges might increase after today.

Shit's amazing. My favorite was the quote from his son:

Hey Jay - noone is impugning your father's commitment to Penn State University. In fact, I will go so far as to say that Joe Paterno has proven he was more committed to his university than any other person has ever been committed to a university in human history. Any man willing to cover up for a known pedophile to protect the good name of his university will always and forever be the champion of commitment to his university.

    No one doubts that.

That commitment was his greatest flaw.

pg49: As the investigation progressed, Curley made several requests to Schultz for updates. On May 13, 1998 at 2:21 p.m., Curley emailed Schultz a message captioned "Jerry," and asked, "Anything new in this department? Coach is anxious to know where it stands." Schultz forwarded Curley's note to [university police chief Thomas] Harmon, who provided an email update that Schultz then forward to Curley. The reference to Coach is believed to be Paterno.

pg51: After Curley's initial updates to Paterno, the available record is not clear as to how the conclusion of the Sandusky investigation was conveyed to Paterno. Witnesses consistently told the Special Investigative Counsel that Paterno was in control of the football facilities and knew "everything that was going on." As Head Coach, he had the authority to establish permissible uses of football facilities. Nothing in the record indicates that Curley or Schultz discussed whether Paterno should restrict or terminate Sandusky's uses of the facilities of that Paterno conveyed any such expectations to Sandusky.

That's some hardcore evidence right there, DIG UP HIS CORPSE. Knee Jerk reaction to headlines are always hilarious.
