I think you are all overblowing how his personality effects the team. There's no "style" that works. Bill B. runs a tight ship. Rex Ryan runs his damn mouth. Mike Tomlin is probably too honest. It will come down to if he can coach, which we haven't really seen on hard knocks. I think that's a bit unprecedented from the Hard Knocks I've seen. There's little focus on a first year coach. Ryan Tannehill's wife gets more airtime than Philbin (Which is OK by me). Philbin seems uncomfortable with the HBO cameras in his office when he's talking to players, I think that's understandable. He seems like a guy that likes private moments to be private. I'm guessing most of you haven't watched him at a press conference. He looks like he's been doing it for years. My guess is that Philbin wanted nothing to do with Hard Knocks, it was Ross's choice.

Personally I am completely aware I am making sweeping judgements based on snippets of footage. Philbin just doesn't seem to command much respect to me.

no one way to do it, to coach well. we'll see what he's got

sweeping generalizations from snippets filtered by HBO production, yeah. it might be important to some of the younger players, this season's (their) Hard Knocks product. I dunno

the trainwreck in the division might be worse up where it's cold and shiz; yay 2012 season

Seems to be more the case with Ireland to me. But that's probably because I read a lot about the team and Hard Knocks is only a means to provide insight without context. Philbin has a very calm demeanor, on hard knocks and elsewhere, but have you seen the coaches he surrounds himself with? Dan Campbell, Kevin Coyle, Mike Sherman, Ken O'Keefe...all are complete opposites of Philbin. I think that's important to have when you have a coach that doesn't come in and yell and scream and cuss at players. My only knock thus far on Philbin is we haven't seen him take control of a situation. He seems to lean on his peers more than most head coaches, but he's a first year guy in his first camp. He'll either come into his own, or he, Ireland, and Tannehill will be finding work within a couple of seasons.

Philbin is not the right match for such a disjointed and inexperienced group of players. They need a hard ass to whittle it down, tell it like it is, and get them going. He's pussyfooting around so goddamn much it's depressing. The assistant coaches may have some more character to them, but clearly it isn't helping much.

Even the best coach wouldn't be able to do too terribly much with this group, but still.

And you came to that conclusion from the 3 hours of footage taken from 300 hours of tape (with probably less than an hour of footage being related to game planning/practice/evaluation)? HBO is an entertainment company, not a football company. They show what's entertaining. Breaking down film and instructing players isn't entertaining. Ryan Tannehill's wife is entertaining.

Sorry I want my hc not to be pushed around by the vets. How many "player councils" have you heard of before? The guy is overmatched

Two things. One, it's not true that teams dictate what HBO can and cannot show. They can squash some things, not others. There's also hundreds of hours footage each week, so teams don't have time to edit. Teams also review the final product pretty late in the week.

Second, almost all teams have a veteran council. Don't be so fucking dense.
