With the San Francisco 49ers jumping into the race for Peyton Manning's services, free-agent quarterback Alex Smith is making a play of his own.

Smith is in Miami to visit Sunday with the Dolphins.

"This is the NFL. I guess nothing surprises me anymore," Smith told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on Sunday.

"I never thought a year ago (Peyton) Manning would be a free agent either," Smith told the newspaper. "I'm never surprised by anything."

Niners sign Manning; trade for Luck; Pime Taradox!

If the Dolphins actually sign him as a starter while Flynn is on the market I will lose all respect for them.

I don't fault either the Fins or Smith for the interview. Niners need to realize that he's an UFA and if they don't get manning Smith can drive up his price. For Miami, just think they're trying to check all avenues if Flynn goes to Seattle.

you all laugh but SF was a special teams play away/one knee bounce away from going to the super bowl with Alex fucking Smith. We had Swain, Ted Ginn Jr, Kyle Williams as WRs last year of which would be lucky to be named a number 3 WR on most teams + Crabtree. We had Braylon Edwards who didn't do shit for us all year and sat out inured until we cut him. Not to mention we lost TE Delanie Walker for a few games including vs NO.

please explain to me how the team that barely lost the NFC championship last year would look worse with Moss, Manningham and Crabtree.

I also never said that they would win the super bowl next year I said they would be favored, as in have the best Vegas odds before the season started. Someone mentioned the Giants and Saints? Giants don't even have the best odds from NFC East to win next year. SF (without Peyton Manning) is tied 10-1 with the Saints and the Giants are 8-1. NE is favored at 5-1 and the Packers were at 11-2. If you people honestly don't think Vegas would change the odds after acquiring Manning then i'm not sure what to tell you.

We will have every single one of our defense starters next year. every single change we have made has been a positive one from last year thus far except for losing special teams player Costanzo and losing Adam Snyder our flexible G.

you're just kidding yourselves if you're saying you wouldn't be scared to face a Manning lead team with the 49ers defense behind him in the playoffs.

only part of the article that makes sense and has been discussed in other articles is about Harbaugh and our OC giving up control with running the offense and play calling, something Lordender has been mentioning for about a week. if any of you actually watched our games you would see why our kicker (Akers mvp) broke the FG record and why our redzone offense was one of the worst in the league. what i'm getting at is our conservative play calling could use a boost and change (since the OC didn't land that job in Penn) I've read other articles discussing that Harbaugh would be open to sharing ideas and getting on the same game plan as Manning.

It was also mentioned after acquiring Moss that one asset he would bring to the team and to Harbaugh is his vast knowledge of the game including the ability to get creative and innovative in the film room, something mentioned by nearly anyone who has been around Moss. If Harbaugh is willing, looking forward and being receptive to Moss in this way why wouldn't he be similar with Manning.

I don't think Harbaugh will be the one that stands in the way of the Manning deal from happening, I think they would be able to work towards a common goal of winning a super bowl. I also wouldn't think many people (Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, VDavis) would go all diva for long around Manning/Harbaugh. Unfortunately at this point I would be pretty shocked if Manning named the Niners on mon/tues with how things have played out unless he visits the facility asap.

most likely we wlll end up with Smith and be disappointed :/

Much better gamble to go with a guy who has had 2 good games and possible potential to be a good QB after sitting behind one of the elite QB's in the league, or you can choose Alex Smith, who has had 1 decent year and the rest of his career is mediocre.

It's less about me being on the Flynn wagon and more that he isn't Alex Smith. And Tweek what you're saying doesn't matter, Trent Dilfer played decent enough to win a Super Bowl and everyone knows he is terrible. If a team is built to the point where they won't need spectacular QB play to advance constantly, it's irrelevant. Alot of the top teams right now like the Ravens have average or inconsistent QB play but they can make it pretty far regardless. The Ravens were a FG away from OT and a possible SB appearance with Flacco actually playing a really really good game, but still, it's Joe Flacco. 1 postseason isn't gonna convince me otherwise.

what the fuck are you talking about? Manning on the Niners last year you think it would have come down to a knee bounce off Kyle Williams? Adding an elite QB to an already playoff ready team just increases their chances. Adding Manning to the Niners (let's not mention the upgrades to WR) would 100% increase their odds to win the super bowl before the season started, this is not even debatable. They are currently set at 10-1 odds, it would increase their odds, the only statement I'm saying that people seem to be freaking out about is imo they would be favored or tied with NE.. Plain and simple. The only reason the Pats are above GB is because the AFC has much less competition, being in the NFC would be the only thing hurting the Niners for the odds makers.
