Guild buff banners: Do they spawn only on the leader of the guild? How do they work? Specifically the early level banners like 5% exp bonus for 30minutes to all allies who touch it. I don't quite understand how they're used.

Your guild leader "builds" them and then places them on the ground in some area. They last for 30 minutes in that spot. ANYONE who touches the banner will receive the 5% buff from the banner. So basically your GM will say in guildchat, "I am dropping a banner for the guild at the Divinity's Reach Asura Gate, come get your buff if you want it!" After that the banner will sit there, with your Guild's Emblem on it for the duration. You can only receive the buff once (as far as I could test it), it does not have any charges, and everyone can gain the buff (guild members and non guild members alike).
So I'm trying to decide between Mesmer (which I played in GW1) and Thief... both look very strong and well-suited to my play style... anyone have experience playing either one or teaming with someone who has?
Yes, I also played Mesmer in GW1 and really do not like it in GW2, it plays very very different. All in all its pretty much impossible to use GW1 as a reference.
They have tried to make the Mesmer a bit closer to how it felt in GW1 since the CBT, and while it feels like a spiritual successor, it does not have nearly the same feel as you did when you ran around casting Panic on people. Yet I can say the same exact thing about the Necromancer. Both professions are merely a shadow of what they were in GW1, but both of them are extremely fun and rewarding to play once you get past the whole "this isn't the same feeling" thing. Mesmer is an incredibly powerful choice to make. It has been strengthened and it quite fun to play. Do not knock it just because it isn't what you remember it to be.
Question on Mesmer: I keep seeing posts about how people hate the Great Sword, and that the Staff does a lot better damage, but in my WvWvW play, I'm just not seeing it ( I run GS/Staff in WvWvW and PvE I run GS/Sword & Pistol). Aside from the Chaos Storm, the damage appears paltry, compared with what I can do with the GS, in the time it takes to re-charge that skill. Am I missing some obvious game mechanic or are people just talking about sPvP onry, where the best combo is Staff/Sword & Pistol? Also, GS #3 needs to drop the targeted AoE and go back to what it was before.
Staff does very little dmg. It puts conditions on ppl and is a fantastic support/utility weapon. But GS is great for all out dmg and clone creation. Look at staff #1 ability..
it does no dmg and just puts a random condition on a person. and then your illusion does more dmg based on the # of conditions on the other npc/player. But chaos storm and the shield ability are amazing for support/utility. and so is the backdash clone1.
The great thing about sword / pistol is that you create a clone that jumps towards the target... and then you can trade places w/ that clone. its a great move to close the distance on ppl
I figured I wasn't really missing anything on staff. I use it on Veteran mobs, and people around it just go Hulk Smash during Chaos Storm. I pop Phase Retreat to get a Clone casting Winds of Chaoss, then switch back to Greatsword to help DPS. I'll also use it when groups clash up close, to help smash through lines. I can see it being a lot more useful in sPvP and dungeon runs, and combined with Chaotic Dampening gives a big defensive boost. I just don't get the whole bashing on GS as if it had no use.
Sorry, I don't remember which thread it was even posted in -- could someone post the list of where the big alliances are going? I'm trying to convince my friends to avoid the biggest ones...
Remember the two large alliances, Titan and Ascension have yet to release their choices. Lol, Ascension actually has some sort of "selective" mailing list set up that you can try and get onto via Tales of Tyria that will send out email to the few "selected" people 3 hours before server up with their choice of servers.
I know servers will get full on launch. I am actually worried about my personal choice filling up, but that shit is just fucking batshit paranoid. The fucking ego's on some of these people is insane.
I thought Ascension already selected Northern Shiverpeaks? Titan's still holding out.
At this point it seems like its just best to keep in touch with whatever group you wanna be with and keep your options open. Doesnt mean not having a Plan A, B, C, D, etc in place wont help, but i wouldnt set my heart on anywhere specific just yet.
It's also a 3 hour spam fest for official login time/character creation, so ya, shit's going to be all over the place, and then the server transfer requests come flooding in.
I think I just realized why there's the 3 hour start window...... Oh ArenaNet...you...
If they did, thats news to me. There was a 10minute snippet of the Tales of Tyria podcast this week that was dedicated to telling you about their email list that the alliance was creating and that not everyone who asked to join the list was going to be included. That the list would send out an email stating their chosen server hours before launch. Like I said earlier... what fricking egos these guys have. Anyway, unless things changed, or the ToT guys are full of shit (which they most definitely are), the alliance hasn't chosen anything.
Link from their shownotes to the mailing list application form.
I've gone and more or less did a media blackout for this game for months. I think the last time I cared was when that big purple dragon was first introduced. So what I want to ask is how exactly does the game 'feel'? I don't know why I'm hesitate about this game, but I am. What kind of restrictions, like character slots, are there? Shit I enjoyed GW1 so idk
If you enjoyed GW1 there is no reason not to try it, as its 100 times better.
As far as character slots you start with 5 but like GW1 you can purchase more slots in the Gem shop, but unlike GW1 you can actually use your in game gold trade them for gems and buy stuff from the Gem shop.
Knowing that I'm expecting prices to be high unless it's some actual exchange you can do from a menu?
Yes its part of the store, not with another person, it varies depending on the demand and market conditions across all servers, so we do not know since the game hasn't released yet. Also making gold has been relatively easy. The fact that you have a choice of using your RL cash or your in game gold to buy stuff form the cash shop is still pretty awesome. Again if you liked GW1 you really cannot go wrong.
Thanks. Think I'll look up other shit tomorrow.
