I salvage all white drops and salvageable mats, fine salvage kits are cheap and can be bought with karma. I also purposely craft rare weapons for ecto salvaging.

I'm now lvl 42 and I'm in belief my lvl 30 gear is now obeslete. Should I bother upgrading? I went from 30-42 on one day off of work. It's ridiculous on how easy it is to level. Anyhow, should I bother upgrading my gear? Is Magic Find worth stating into gear?
Good God, I would totally do this if I could have on-the-fly swappable skill/item sets kind of like Rift.
Yea, I got up to 169 in Jewelery at lvl 40 and realized this Gold phase is going to cost me way more than the Silver/Copper phase. I tried to do Leathercrafting (I got it to 75) but doing that cost me nearly 1.5 as much as getting Jewelery to 150. At least completing hearts gives me 2 silver now. Wooh.
It is literally always "free" to upgrade all of your gear to blues and usually greens off of the TP. So many items are on the TP at 1c above their NPC value, so you can upgrade your gear constantly and just NPC all the stuff you bought when you outlevel it. For some levels, even rares are cheap-as-free so you can look for those as well.
And I don't think anything is worth much until lvl80ish, so worrying about MF before then is silly.
Does MF only affect the quality of things and not the quantity? Would it increase the chances of the mining nuggets/whatever-the-higher-gems-are?
Pretty sure it doesn't effect quantity at all.
I've heard very mixed things about MF%, I use MF food but don't gear for it all and I can't say I've ever noticed much difference with food up or without it. A lot of people swear by making a MF% set once you hit 80 but personally I think that's a massive waste of time and money. Just craft whatever set you need and... well, you never really need to worry about gear again outside of stuff for aesthetics (IE dungeon or maybe karma stuff). You may want a second set for a different kind of build (I know tons of people make a glass cannon set and then make a secondary set for stuff like dungeons and WvW with toughness and/or vitality. Though I am of the opinion the glass cannon set is worthless, seeing as the only places gear really matters is dungeons/WvW). Once you have your full exotic set, money practically becomes worthless imo. Repair costs are pretty insignificant and the only real other place to spend is siege weapons in WvW, but you'll generally be making more money than you're spending here too.
I think I understand it: People are idiots. Luckily it isn't as much of a problem with 400 recipes if you go and farm at least a material or two by yourself or I'd cut my wrists.
Best looting event/dragon/dungeon post 80?
Well, when I did it, I had around 80 garments to salvage, not including the cloth armor drops, and the 100+ loot bags. That was about 2 hours of grinding, maybe three? I did it off and on through work, so I don't have exact numbers for the time spent. There's a vendor there, so it's easy to dump stuff, and at 80, you almost three hit stuff, as a Mesmer.
Whirling Wrath and Binding Blade will be my best friends then. Thanks guys. I'll check it out
Would suggest Symbol of Swiftness too for tagging. It doesn't have a target cap and has a pretty large range and radius, especially if traited.
For tagging I always use symbols for sure, but I love aoes on my guardian and tend to use GS alot.
As well as gold farmers selling mass amounts of items, for very small profit, driving prices down.
prices for items are established from merchant value right or just the difficulty to obtain it? Never quite understood how an items value is determined on the ah really.
