Those studies would be such a circle jerk façade. Our federal government found out everything it needed to know about cannabis from reports commissioned by Kennedy and Johnson, and policies still went in the wrong direction. (I believe this research has been largely banished since Nixon.) This was some 5-10 years before the DEA was created in 1973, merging earlier govt bureaus.

Note that even the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937 allowed for an excise tax for those with approved medical and industrial needs. Granted, this tax was prohibitively expensive and effectively ended hemp cultivation, the main purpose of the legislation. Additionally, the marijuana grown by our government in Mississippi is sent to individuals, albeit very few, deemed in medical need.

One could poke holes all day; our government can't be objective here, and we all know it.

UK government finally concedes cannabis has a medicinal effect

The government’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found that Cannabidiol (CBD) has a “restoring, correcting or modifying” effect on “physiological functions” when administered to humans, in a potential milestone in the campaign to legalise cannabis and bring about evidence-based laws regarding drugs.

The review of CBD, a cannabinoid accounting for up to 40% of the marijuana plant's extract that doesn't contain its psychoactive THC but is purported to retain the health benefits, came about following discussions with CBD vaporiser company MediPen.

The MHRA’s findings are not directly applicable to the government’s response to last year’s petition to legalise cannabis, but stand in stark contrast, with the petition having been batted away by the Home Office with the assessment that cannabis “can unquestionably cause harm to individuals and society”.

GW Pharmaceuticals has also just concluded a positive phase 3 clinical trial demonstrating the safety and efficacy of CBD.

“Since our inception we’ve worked hard to obtain our goal of breaking down the negative connotations surrounding Cannabis to lead to a reform in the law for medicinal use,” Jordan Owen, Managing Director of MediPen, told The Independent, “now this is finally becoming a reality, which will provide ground-breaking results,
Lets see the DEA dismiss this one.

Oh great. I foresee a dozen or so fb friends posting about how this is simultaneously the government finally being honest about how MJ can cure everything and replace every material known to man... and at the same time the government lying about what parts are useful to get us to feed big pharma while denying us the real "health" benefits

I've been thinking about it but I do got some cool folks. But seems fewer and fewer each day. Especially the ones I see posting all the time you can see them little by little losing their chill as time goes by.

I'm off until November 5th for now. Too many people to unsubscribe too. I know they'll all collect their respective bullshit once the election is over.

Just to point out again here, the synergy between cannabinoids (and terpenes, flavonoids, etc.) should not be overlooked. Of course, we're a long way away from creating therapeutically-optimized cannabis products by specific illness and preferred cannabinoid contents, psychoactive or not. These CBD extracts are just one of the baby steps taken by an infant industry.

The case here, epilepsy, tends to be one of the most commonly shared, most straightforward, and at least somewhat helpful in persuading the reefer madness individuals that maybe we should reexamine cannabis laws. Simply because CBD is incredibly anti-epileptic and seemingly preferable to benzodiazepines, doesn't mean there's like a 'good part' and 'bad part' to cannabis.

Perhaps another illness isn't treated nearly as well by an extract of singular compound. Maybe, as an example, inhibiting growth of cancer cells was more significant when an extract containing multiple cannabinoids was administered, such as CBD and THC.

One may not like THC's mild psychoactivity, but breeding it out entirely isn't necessarily improving medicinal properties.

As an aside, CBD tends to counteract THC's psychoactivity. I wish this were more understood, but it'll take time. When a reporter from the east coast travels west and eats a 200mg edible, little does she know a pure CBD product would be the best bet to bring the discomfort down a notch. They probably had something at the same shop. (Well, the next best bet. Ideally, you don't take 20+ doses at once when you're not an experienced user.) But people don't seem to want to learn and understand dosage, for one, let alone the biochemistry when it comes to cannabis. The industry is limited a lot here too. Basics, such as the difference between edibles and inhaled options, can be overlooked until you get floored by a brownie the first time. 11-Hydroxy-THC is about 9-10x more psychoactive than Delta-9-THC. This is the difference when one's liver is involved.

I know you've been pretty Zet in all your posts today. It was just the opportunity to chime in.

This thread has been mostly dead since 2014. More states ought to hop on board soon though, and more information here might be nice as more state legislation is passed.

Anyone have any insight into the California law on the ballot coming up to legalize recreational marijuana? I have seen lots of people saying that it is poorly written and will make it harder for small farmers and producers to grow product while supporting and encouraging big agriculture and big businesses to take over the industry. I have even seen people who support its eventual legalization saying to vote no this time around for various reasons but I didn't see anything in the bill itself that would make me think that would be the case.

The trouble is, there's a whole lot of bullshit of organizations both for and against, trying to obscure their motivations. And you generally need to leave it to those who are adapt at sifting past it to get to the reality.
Generally, I don't sit down and research through propositions until a week and a half before the election, so there's the most possible news coverage for digging into things.

Though, with how many there are this go around, I'll probably need to start early.
Considering the number of Cali/LA BGers, we could probably get away with doing an individual thread for the CA ballot.

That is exactly the problem that I am having finding any real information. I would love to see a good discussion here about this issue. I am just not adept enough at sifting through the shit to find the real information.

i find it absurd, yet inevitable, the kind of proponents that are most ardent about legalizing marijuana are also dragging up the dreaded specter of big agriculture and the natural workings of a regulated market economy as proof the measure should be defeated and instead we ought, in the future, write a bill that will leave us all in serene from-each-according-to-their-ability-to-each-according-to-their-need repose in a Grateful Dead theme commune. spoiler alert, large businesses and companies enter into any viable market and yet somehow those markets truck along with versions of products both high-value and artisan + mass produced and affordable. to wit big agriculture is in the banana game and bananas are cheap and wonderful and i eat them every day without being ground down by market monopolies.

the bill will raise hundreds of millions annually through the excise taxes (revenue presently going to the Mexican cartels who derive roughly 20-25% of their income from selling marijuana to Americans) and reduce annual expenditures by tens of millions as the criminal justice system can stop targeting and jailing potheads, has a pure anarchosyndacolibertarianfreedomisntfree provision allowing individuals to grow up to 6 plants in their own home for private consumption, and in addition to legalizing consumption greatly reduces the sentencing for selling marijuana without a license from a 4 year felony bid in state prison to a maximum of 6 months in county jail and/or a $500 fine. taking money from Sinaloa sicarios to give to addiction treatment centers and at least partially ending the ruinous failure that is the criminalized war on drugs seems a self-evident good capable of surmounting nearly any objection but i guess the fear of Monsanto runs strong in this ridiculous state.

moreover even these ill-formed populist fears of the big bad big agriculture have been explicitly addressed in the proposition as licenses for large cultivators would not be granted for 5 years after ratification, presumably to protect the smaller scale cultivators presently dominating the medicinal trade from disruption.

i am not equal to the task of defining what a 'perfect' legislative bill would look like, but this proposition is a bright shining illumination of don't allow the perfect be the enemy of the good. it will boost state finances, deprive the cartels of much of their income and thereby their power, lessen the criminal justice system's pursuit of nonviolent offenders, and increase the adult citizenry's liberty to do with their bodies as they desire. the financial gain is clear, and the moral gain clearer.
