    Randomly forced hibernate mode?

This started last week when I DL'd the new Nvidia drivers. Since then my ASUS laptop would randomly go into a forced hibernate mode. I mean I could be typing, installing a program, ect... and it would randomly force itself hibernate. Once the screen goes black I can't get it out of hibernate mode until the comp itself shut down (usually take about 30 seconds to 1min). Then the only way to wake it up is by pressing the power button, at which point it then acts like its full reboot w/ showing ASUS logo and "resuming windows."

The forced hibernate mode is pretty random. can happen after 1hr, 30 minutes, or even every 5 minutes.

I originally thought it was the Nvidia drivers so I reverted back to the old drivers w/ doing a clean install. But I still had the problem. As a last resort I even wiped the laptop and went back to factory settings/configurations. But I still have the problem (really sad).

When I boot into safe mode I don't seem to have the problem (I'm smart and didn't try safe mode before a clean install). But safe mode also disabled sleep/hibernate functions. Is there a way to disable hibernate/sleep mode outside of sleep mode? Doing it in the options doesn't help, but I mean disabling the drivers or w/e function regulates it?

Thanks for the help. I know it sounds like I need to send my laptop in.. but its 4 months old and I shouldn't be having these issues. And midterms are 5 days away so i can't afford to be w/o a laptop since its how you take tests.

Has anybody maybe heard of this type of thing before? I tried random google searches and no luck.

I think your best bet is to kill the hibernate all together for now. Don't ask me what went wrong, I don't know..But something in the computer went nuts on you.

On XP it is possible to turn the hibernate off, at least on my desktop without a pain in the butt. (Left click on desktop ==> go to Screensaver ==>Power Settings===>Turn it off)

According to a quickie search on turning that off if you're using Windows 7, This might help you. I ASSUME windows 7 at this point though. And I'm not very familiar with it.

If THAT don't work I don't know what to tell you...Hopefully someone who has played with Windows 7 can help more than me.

Could it be related to what your laptop is setup to do when low on power? Your factory default on low power may be to hibernate, so your laptop's battery might be triggering low power even if you're plugged in.

Try taking the battery out while plugged in and see if it persists (or remove battery, plug in laptop, then turn it on). If it doesn't, battery is bad. If it persists... I got nothing, but it's likely something to do with power management hardware or its settings. Just odd it was triggered by a driver update for vid card.

I actually removed the battery and left the comp unplugged for like20 minutes today to reset the mobo. And I haven't had the issue since. So it might of been battery related... Maybe loose or something. If it Happens again I'll try that idea and see if that is the real issue. Thanks for the help you two !

depending on the laptop design it could also have some sort of button/latch that causes hibernate when the screen is tilted at a certain angle. I know my dad had a dell laptop that had this issue and it's because of poor design where when you start closing the lid or open it too far it would go into hibernate as sort of the close the screen hibernate kind of design. could also just be a defective battery too
