    Suggestions for laptop cooling pads

Lately, my laptop has been overheating very easily and it shuts down as a fail-safe. While convenient so I don't burn out my hardware, it is quite annoying, so I've decided to get a cooling pad for it to rest on. The problem? I have no idea what the fuck is good/bad out there. There are only 2 things to note:

    1. Price really isn't an issue, but cooling effectiveness is (of course).
    2. If a small arched stand is included then that's a plus. It's another thing I've been meaning to get so I can have better ease of use on the couch/in bed

    Thanks for the help

I've had some issues with laptops in the past when I'm gaming with the whole overheating and then the fail-safe shut down as well. I picked this up a few years ago: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-...0492472&sr=8-2 and it's worked quite effectively. During gaming sessions on the laptop I would no longer overheat that much and it's really easy to clean considering the fans come off etc so you can also replace them easily and also move them to the appropriate spot for the laptop wherever the exhaust is. Kinda pricy considering it's literally just 2 mini usb fans attached to a grid, but if the fans die can always just replace the fans cheaply. Gets the job done though, but unfortunately no arched stand.. unless you count the angle it's at

I use that one too and that's the one Kohan led me to. Isn't that already arched?

What laptop you got? Otherwise, blow it on the big guns:

    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

It's big (for 17 inch laptops) -- one big ass fan, makes little to no noise due to the size of it. Not sure if the metal on my m17x helps but whenever I put my hand down there it's cool.

My current temps are as follows (idle with it on)

    CPU 33C average (Q9000)
    GPU 39c (Nvidia GTX 260m)
    Onboard GPU 49c (Nvidia 9300)
    HDD 39c

    EDIT:
    1.5 hours of WoW --
    CPU - 40c Average
    GPU - 59c
    onboard GPU - 56c
    HDD - 42c

I'll launch WoW later and let you know the temp after 1 hour. Note that this draws air from the bottom and shoots it UP

NOTE: 2.5 years of use, no sign of the fan rattling or getting damaged

    ---

My old laptop, a Dell 12incher (XPS m1210) had this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Antec-Notebo...0517921&sr=8-5

    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

This has 2 fans. After 2 odd years of use, they rattle on startup and are MINORLY noisy. It smooths out eventually but can still be noticed in a quiet

I know the temperatures on this off by heart as I used to have a desktop app that monitors the Dell systems:

CPU - 65C idle, with fan = 30-35C depending on activity -- goes up to 55C on load (dual box FFXI) (Core2Duo T7200)
GPU - 70C ~ idle = with fan it drops to 50C but dualboxing FFXI shoots it up to 65 or so

The GPU is hot because of the laptop design, the Nvidia 9400s is moulded into the board, and the laptop is a 12incher. Infact it actually burned out and damaged the GPU after long term dual boxing. I've stopped using the laptop since, but even though the GPU is functional, when it goes hot it will crash. This laptop is now a work laptop as office apps do not tax the GPU.

This fan draws air from the TOP and shoots it underneath the pad. (a bad design in my opinion as my Dell drew air from the bottom of the laptop)

I use the same one that five posted about. I've had it for close to a year now and have had zero issues with keeping my laptop cool even through extended gaming sessions.

    How big is your laptop?

I'm using this one for my 18.4" and it works pretty well, drops temperatures by about 5-10C. The right portion of my laptop extends beyond the cooler, but it's just the numpad area and I rarely use it.

If you're looking for super heavy duty, then this one is good, but it requires its own outlet.

Then there's a 3-fan version for the one five linked to:
