Bethesda has confirmed development of a "new version" of Doom 4, apparently planned for the next-generation of consoles - but the game appears to be a long way off.

Sources speaking with Kotaku claim the release date is up in the air after a reboot in late 2011. Development is "not going well" according to one source, although Bethesda, owner of id Software, claims the game is still in the works.

"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda's marketing boss Pete Hines said in a new statement.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

Apparently, after Rage didn't meet sales expectations, ZeniMax, parent company of Bethesda and id Software, cancelled Rage 2 and 'downsized' plans for Rage DLC.

Now, all id staff are working on Doom 4.

The project seems to be going through a very tough period. Around 6 months after the reboot mentioned by 6souls above, ID president Todd Hollenshead resigned and Carmack has left the company.

So far we've got nothing at hand other than the problems above, it will be difficult for id to pull a technical marvel like doom 3.

additionally, while Wolfenstein includes beta access for Doom, as far as I understand it doesn't even provide any sort of general window just "when it is available" which doesn't read as them being confident of it's current state.

Also there have been rumors of the MP being outsourced. (admittedly there's every chance the rumors are BS) I'm not familiar with Glassdoor, so idk if there's any sort of verification or if anyone can right a review, and even if it is a disgruntled employee they could be lying.

Bethesda tells gamers to lower their expectations of the game
Doom 4 publisher Bethesda has warned against assuming that the new shooter is awesome just because of the series legacy. The company’s VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines has stressed that Doom needs to reinvent and prove itself all over again.

Speaking with MCV, Hines recalled how the Wolfenstein brand stumbled for a while before returning with a bang in Wolfenstein: The New Order. He effectively said that this needs to happen with Doom 4.

On Wolfenstein, Hines explained, “The last couple of games were either ‘ok’ or ‘not great’. It wasn’t a franchise where people were desperate for the next one. Wolfenstein isn’t Uncharted. We knew this would take some explaining. But developer Machine Games has now untarnished the IP.”

Then on Doom 4 he went on, “We view that similarly to Wolfenstein, because it’s been so long since the last Doom game. We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again. We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome.

“We are going to have to prove that this is something that’s going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can’t be: ‘It’s Doom, of course you’re going to play it’. But that just makes us work harder.”

The next Doom game will be a reboot, simply titled Doom, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Bethesda Softworks announced at QuakeCon. It will run on idTech 6 and run in 1080p at 60 frames per second.

“The game is called Doom, not Doom 4,” executive producer Marty Stratton said on stage. “It’s an origin game, re-imagining everything about the originals.”

“The game begins just outside of a massive research facility on the surface of Mars.”

The QuakeCon reveal focused on the game’s single-player campaign and combat, which Stratton said “nothing feels quite like.” The first mechanic showcased was demons, who are mechanical and corrupt hell knights. The second mechanic is guns. Players will have access to both conventional guns and big guns, like the double barrel shotgun. Some combat will be hand-to-hand.

The Doom reboot will focus on high-speed movement and run-and-gun action, like the old Doom games.

Tomb Raider did it right. Bethesda has enough personnel to do this some justice if they aren't half ass-ing it.

Doom IV this long after 3 would look silly, and the subject matter doesn't lend itself too great to doing a spin-off from another perspective. Better off just retelling the base story of demons from Mars.

I'm cautiously optimistic, and given how the new Wolfenstein turned out, perhaps a fresh set of eyes on the dormant Doom IP is what it needs most.

The demo focused on combat, as that’s what the team has been working on the most up till now. Gunplay is designed to capture the spirit of the original, with fast-paced run-and-gun at its heart, and some “new combat mechanics and features to evolve the FPS experience”.

Whatever it is that has changed, some things remain the same, and one of those is enemies: players will face down demons of various kinds, from smaller types that attack in groups to huge foes that require plenty of bullets to defeat.

Melee attacks are varied, and one particularly useful one is a stomp triggered after stunning an enemy with a firearm. Weapons shown included the shotgun, chainsaw and plasma rifle. Health does not regenerate, but enemies may drop health.

Fans may be pleased to learn the demo contained a lot of blood – as well as all the melee executions and the player’s own arm being ripped off by a demon, one sequence had the player tear the arm off a fallen character to access a palm print-locked door. Double jumps are in, too.

Wasn't Doom 3 already a reboot of the series though?

I'm just cynical about the whole "let's pretend those previous (good) games in the franchise didn't exist and/or try to milk this IP for all we can" fad that's going on lately (e.g. Simcity).

ah yes, let's not forget how they threw out the rich lore of simcity for some dark and gritty new reboot

Did any one even care about the story in any doom? Experiments open a portal to hell, on mars, and now you're dealing with it. That's...all I need to be scared shirtless while whipping ass.
