I have also played FFXI (played it for about 5 years) but it was game I was paying for access for ($15/mo).

I put this in the same vein as BF3. It has single player that REQUIRES internet to play. It's really stupid, because unless you have internet you can't enjoy the game.

Instead of people trying to elicit change, we're getting people who are content with getting screwed over and laughed at because once again "no big dill". You shouldn't have to be made to stay online to play a single player game. I get what they're trying to do but realistically if the game is multiplayer they should have just called it "Sim City Online" and marketed it as an online game. Then people might have actually not felt... you know... lied to.

except they said for awhile now it would require online so thats almost exactly what they did do...not in favor of the system, but unfortunately we knew it was coming.

If they marketed it as Sim City Online, they may have actually been expected to provide not sh*tty service, patches and updates that aren't nickle/Dime schemes, and reliable servers.

    God forbid that from EA.

WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TRYING TO SAY? ARE YOU SAYING PAYING 15 DOLLARS A MONTH IS OK FOR 5 YEARS JUST TO PLAY A GAME? LOOOOOOOL MUCH? Sure, one is an MMO but irregardless, having your access to a game restricted by a monthly fee versus just being required to be online? What are you even trying to argue? Some of us enjoy playing with our friends and building cities with them. Do you seriously think everyone here is a small minded tool like you? The only thing being asked for here is better servers not some fucking revolution.

I find it ironic that the guy that flew off the handle is the one calling people a small minded tool, but that's just me.

You're just jealous that Sim City 5 is awesome and can't see it.

But seriously, always online DRM for a game whose history comes from its great singleplayer makes perfect sense...not really though. You enjoy building cities with your friends Kisamoo, assuming you can get online to play with them, and that's great. But it hurts the franchise to put an always online DRM that hurts people who just want to play it singleplayer, like the series has normally been. The anti-piracy thing is a copout and there is literally nothing stopping EA from making a new one in 2-4 years with the same system, and drop support for this one and leaving everyone who purchased it without the ability to play it. The irony is that going to these extremes to prevent piracy always hurt the consumer, more to the point that it turns away actual customers as opposed to people who never intended to purchase the product and waiting for an opportunity to pirate it.

Paying for a game and not being able to play the game whenever you want is beyond wrong. With MMO's you are paying a subscription fee with the expectation you are just playing on their servers and they own everything, but with that (normally) comes constant bug fixes and content/balance updates. Always online in an MMO makes sense. Always online for D3 even made sense because of the series history and the desire to avoid the item hacking/duping that plagued D2 with the addition of the D3 auction house. Always online for Sim City makes no logical sense.

Paying for MMOs was the cash grab that spurred the MMO revolution in mid 2000s before DLC and micro transactions came into prominence. Everyone and their fucking mother wanted in on that cash cow. Now, most MMOs are completely free to play. This is how developers put their hands in your pocket originally. By REQUIRING YOU TO PAY THEM to access THEIR SERVICES. Now, we pay once, can access their services while they nickle and dime us here and there. Wait a minute, games as a service? Where have I heard that before? Oh wait, that's Riot Games entire fucking motto.

Always online for Diablo 3 didn't make sense for the people who just wanted to play alone without any interaction with the online economy or characters.

Always online doesn't make sense for Sim City? Wait a second...

Imagine playing Simcity 4 with your friends in real time......
Imagine building your region with your friends..........
Imagine not having to scream when you lost your cities, plugins and more.......

That was a dream that seem impossible.........until now.....

    Introducing.....( Drumroll )

    Simcity 4 Multiplayer Mode
What's this?! A fan made mod for Simcity that revolutionized everything? What if there was a Sim City designed from the ground up with multiplayer in mind, albeit with DRM in hand.

The minority of people play Diablo for solo play, it's an option but in that franchise the number of people who play solo is in no way the majority. And when you figure they added things like the Auction House(which people have wanted for the longest time in Diablo, having to make a room that can only hold 8 people to get shit was never fun) and to make gold relevant(which some people wanted since after a certain point gold is only useful for buying TP tomes and pots) the always online part was added to deal with the cheating that is rampant in Diablo. And pointing out a Sim City 4 mod that gives an option for online play =/= people want to always play online, but nice try.

I don't agree with how they handled it, but it's alot easier to justify always online in a competitive game that involves gear as opposed to a city simulation game that has it's history in single play and micromanagement. If you somehow feel that the always online DRM rationalization that applies to Diablo 3 and fully online games like LoL/FF11/WoW/Eve Online/etc also applies to Sim City then you are truly a moron and beyond reasoning with. I guess just stick to randomly raging rather than trying to use logic, it seems to work better for you.

Companies always have hands in your pockets, they're just trying to do it in different ways under different pre-text. Remember when Microsoft even considered a Halo MMO? ROFLMAO. Now this is the way of the world. This is the new trend. Always online lets them sell things directly to you. Just like how you open Steam and the first thing that appears is the store, by being always online, companies will be able to throw sales in your face on the main menu. Always online is about WAY MORE than just DRM, kids, and it's about time you see that. Look at League of Legends, whats on the front page? SALES, NEW CHAMPIONS, BUY BUY BUY! Eve sells you Plex while the dinosaurs are still trying to collect monthly fees. Get with the times already it's already all around you, to bitch at this point, now, it's already too late lol.

What will happen to the single players that can't handle managing multiple cities the way Maxis assumes will happen? I imagine an AI patch but who am I kidding - patches? EA doesn't need no stinkin' patches.

You're in jest, of course, but EA has released 4 patches thus far.

There's a big difference between always online and forcing a game that isn't really required to be online to be online. If Steam servers go down you don't magically lose the ability to play your games in single player.

    Quit being such a rage-cock.

I'm just a Sim City player in a Sim City thread, trying to talk about Sim City but there's a lot of rage here. What are you doing here? To bitch about always online and DRM? The only rage cocks here are the ones that haven't bought the game and continue to bitch about it without having a damn clue. Did you read about Sim City on Kotaku then come here to add fuel to the fire? Get that shit out of here. If you bought the game- feel free to bitch, your 50 bucks earned you that right as a paying customer.

What is most unsettling for me at this point is even with taking into account everything that is going wrong with this game - always online, shitty servers, game bugs, removed features, horrid reviews, etc - is that EA is going to be selling even more copies of the game from now till the 18th. I would feel better if they just said only those affected at launch get the free game, but extending it to the 18th is basically bribing everyone else who was holding back in protest, in an attempt to cause people to lose spine and cave in. Companies who just buy away their problems are the most vile and it really is sickening - I can't imagine what their executive meetings are like. They will not be getting any of my money, and if that means I don't get to play this game, then that's ok, I will support other companies who care about their customers.

CD key for 38$ USD. You can call EA and have them change it to English or download an English patch. Friend bought it this way and had EA change it so I guess it's legit.
