This is the same Sony that wanted a Ghostbusters universe. They thought they could ride the tails of the Spider-Man movie to sweet gold.

Marvel, in the mean time, is like "err you morons".

Remember when WoW got huge and then all of a sudden every game developer was making an MMO and only a very very small percentage of them were actually successful?

This Universe thing for movies is the exact same way except with an even smaller success rate.

Though at least to Sony's credit, I think they had learned their lesson from Amazing spiderman 2 and at least tried to make Venom a stand alone film first- though why they would do that with Venom is far beyond me.

Unbreakable series is a good example of how to do it- the same way Iron Man 1 did. Keep the movie it's own entity and then at the very end- "oh shit. Cool."

This specific situation is a lot weirder though since Venom is a part of Spider-Man and Marvel made Spider-Man successfully integrated into the marvel universe. It's kind of like when your doing a group project in school and theres three of you who know what your doing and putting in all the work but theres a fourth person who you're glad to leave out but give credit to because hea a pretty stupid guy. But then as you're almost finished with your presentation the dumb guy just jumps in at the end and starts talking about tapioca pudding.

I think it'll have a good first weekend after that hype train Sony had going. RT plus word of mouth will kill it's second weekend I'm sure.

If they approve a sequel, it'll be the Transformers of comic book movies.
