And having read the rest of this, gaming is without question mainstream. 10+ million people play/have played WoW. Those numbers are equal to that of popular tv shows like Glee and such. And that's an MMO, which is still seen as nerdy by the masses. More "accepted" games like CoD blow those numbers out of the water.
Hell, Wii Sports numbers are coming within the Avatar's range. If that's not the definition of mainstream, I don't know what is.
