And yes, that shit is part of nerd and especially fightan culture... partly perpetuated by the fact that any female who comes onto the scene is generally ass at games and they aren't taken seriously.

To be fair, the entire gaming subculture is built around excluding people these days. Only jocks and bros play halo is a perfect example. Women are just not plain welcome in almost all cases, skill levels are just not relevant. If as many women played the same vidya guys do, the disparity in my opinion would be inconsequential. That said I do have a friend that is brolic as fuck at shitloads of multiplayer games. She plays on xbl with mic off. The second she starts winning, niggas start crying and levying personal attacks. She bodies niggas on the regular at SF4, mad props to her for being better than every dude I know irl at the game. (I know how we both feel about that game and I know xbl is not indicative of tournament level play.)

As soon as a female player comes on stream, everyone is expecting a loss and this becomes the joke then it leads on to other things when they almost invariably lose. If she blows up her opponent, the jeering generally stops.
There's plenty of evidence of this. People used to 'harass' Sherry quite a bit and far less so now that she's placed 'okay' in some tournaments and shit, top 32 at a major isn't anything to scoff and and she now gets respect within the fightan community. (just one instance of what I'm talking about, there are more)

Am I saying this is the only factor to the equation? Fuck no. But to say it is a non-factor just means you aren't looking at the facts.

Perfect example is the Smash community. There are several fantastic female players. They stay shit-talked in places they don't visit. Dudes will harp, regardless of skill. Dudes are haters of anyone encroaching on the boys only club.
