Not disagreeing with you or defending apple....but I always see "its just a minimal upgrade" argument more against apple than any other gadget company when they ALL are starting to do this. Motorola being the perfect example of releasing the same damn phone every 3 months (DROID. 1-4, ATRIX 1-2 etc.)

Yeah it sucks that this is the way things are now and we will have to wait years before we see any features that are actually new...but that's just how it is ...

Also, I have notes plus and taking notes with a stylus sucks. It's horrible. the wrist pad to prevent stray lines doesn't work that well. For lefties, it's practically useless even in left handed mode. Typing notes in notes plus works really well though, especially with the little slider to let you go between powerpoint slides or websites and your notes. Also has a nifty cut feature so you can cut charts out of slides and transfer to your notes and export it all to PDF. Writing note on an ipad sucks, but taking notes is still pretty useful.
I love it, but I'm right-handed. I didn't even consider lefties. Is there some alignment flip or something? I don't use the wrist page.

Still no wacom or wacom-like active pen layer in the new iPad, or in most Android devices after all this time. The most mind numbingly obvious use of a tablet is as a paper replacement and yet only windows tablets are worth half a fuck in this regard; everyone else still uses capacitive crayons to write shit with. Meanwhile, everything but the paper replacement aspect of a windows tablet is bad until you flip the screen around and use a mouse. It's hilarious.

@Elvis: Look into onenote. Nothing really compares to it unfortunately. I mean, it doesn't really matter since you don't have a windows tablet and there are almost none to be had for a reasonable price.

I'm right-handed, it's still pretty useless to me. For lefties, the pad draws down from the top.

Having not owned any tablet at all, I was considering I would fall back into the mighty pen and paper, hence me asking here but as you mentioned, I was intending to use it as a mean to store and access reference material as well (I already found all but one of the books for the first program I intend to do on pdf, certainly not going to pay $150 per book and lug them around). Also as Kaslo mentioned, repetition would help me remember stuff since I've been out of school for almost 10 years so my brain isn't what it used to be. I'm pretty much new still to this country and going into Middle East central (Concordia for those in the know) having a back up (of my notes) elsewhere would be a huge thing to me. Going into Software Engineering kinda makes a bit harder to shy away from tablets from what I'm seeing around me, not sure if I'm lying myself to justify this purchase, I have certainly considered it, lol (I don't even own a smartphone!).

Look into convertible tablet PC running windows 7 if your budget permits. Look at things like the lenovo x220t, HP 2760p, fujitsu t901/ t731/t580 if you're buying new. In Canada the x220 will probably be the most affordable if you can get a decent sale on it. Three reasons for considering this instead of a mainstream tablet:

1.) TabletPC's are real honest to goodness x86 computers. A convertible doubles as a high end notebook. Your materials, assignments, and data in general are best managed in a real OS.

2.) Capacitive touchscreen technology is garbage for writing. Your palm can trip the screen which is not very accurate to begin with, which is why iPad notetaking apps have you write extra big to compensate. Tablet PCs have touch screens usually in addition to a wacom panel which is what artists use for digital inking. It's pressure sensitive, allows for hover gestures, and is highly accurate.

3.) Microsoft Onenote is the best notetaking software that exists, without any question whatsoever.

Apparently Anandtech did some tests of the A5 vs the Tegra 3 when the Transformer Prime was released:

Needless to say the A5X is going to be even faster.

Out of curiosity for note-taking, how does the iPad handle the side of your hand resting/dragging on the touch screen when you're using a stylus?

You probably have to write on it like a chalk board and have nothing but the pen make contact, similar to most tablet pcs/toughbooks with stylus's.

Probably the most annoying thing about touch devices is making contact with things other than your fingers or wanting to move the device without touching something on the screen. It's worse on the iPad because it's so damn huge. App developers and apple should really work to minimize these things, moving buttons from the edges of the screen would be a start. Also fuck apps that put buttons in weird places like the middle/bottom of the screen. Some people really have no idea how to design shit.

Actually tablet PCs don't really have this problem. There are very few tablet PCs with touch and no active digitizer, and not many toughbooks. Indeed up to about 3 years ago most Tablet PC's only had a wacom digitizer and no actual touchscreen, and digitizers only detect the pen. Some users turn off the touchscreen entirely so it doesn't mess with their writing.

It's really not that bad IMO. I'm surprised Tyche hates it.

There is a new stylus being developed (which will specifically support Notes Plus, AFAIK) that only picks up what the stylus makes contact with. So you can rest your hand on the screen and it wouldn't register.

Would require some form of bluetooth or dongled connection from the stylus that to work since the iPad itself cannot differentiate the two like some dedicated drawing tablets can.

Just seems real annoying, the iPad doesn't appear to support pressure sensitivity either. Would have been a decent addition to cater to stylus users on this release, but perhaps that'll have to wait for the iPad4.

Been getting very good reviews so far, 9.3 from The Verge.

    http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/14/2870533/ipad-review

Good that someone brought note taking up as it would be the only reason why I'd consider a tablet computer. Microsoft have recently released Office suite for iPad (along with OneNote), anyone tried it out yet?

They have not released Office for iPad. They're calling the screenshots fake for now but I'm not buying it.

You are right my bad, apparently they've only released OneNote so far

Rumors so far sound pretty solid regarding Office though, a good and compatible Office suite would be a tiebreaker for me at this point. Seeing how solid Office 2011 was, I'm quite hopeful at this point.

Just got mine from Walmart at midnight. Jumping from an iPad 1 to the iPad 3 is a HUGE difference.

Why is that exactly? Not being coy, I just don't own either and am wondering what the big difference other then hardware is. Isn't the os basically the same?
