One option I've been advocating for a while now is that HNMs should exist in the world, with multiple parties able to attack at once. If an item drops, the chance of it going to the loot pool of a party is roughly equal to the percent of damage that party has done (also factoring in holding hate and debuffs, too). I think that would strike a good balance between competition without causing rifts in the server community.

How do you even begin to balance?

Lol 50 people destroying the great buffalo in 20 sec is not my idea of competition and yea balance goes out the window. On that note, they need to remove the ability to atk a purple mob another party has claim of to ever balance out world spawns.

Actually now that you mention it... Theres a dragon in Guild Wars 2 (which looks awesome btw) that is a public boss that anyone can fight. Loot is distributed to everyone from a chest if iirc. But this person is talking about competition... In the GW2 scenario there is no competition just cooperation.

They changed it FROM that. Why would the change it back? New claim system is much better and something more people are familiar with.

Kings weren't difficult, but claiming them and getting the preferred drop were indeed rare circumstances. As people wanted rare shit, they continued to log in and camp every day.

And hating LSes is half the fun.

The hardest thing about kings was claiming them against the botters and JP. That was the entire achievement. Everything else was for loot.

They could so something super crazy like gw2-style events for HNMs. King behemoth spawns, announcement goes out on a special linkshell, content scales to the amount of people and you're awarded currency for winning? Mobs pretty tough and you're not likely to do it without some coordination rather than swarming it.

Claiming battles just don't seem like the way to go about these things anymore.

free company competition could.be done without the need for claim wars, top contributing FCs could get big rewards for their work, like better hamlets/reward options or whatever

I'd say just do it like GW2 and have everyone who fights get something decent, but you'd have the so-called "hardcore" players complaining that the challenge isn't in the boss fight itself, but in the loot, and as such, the "difficulty" of the encounter is based not on the difficulty of the fight, but in the exclusivity of the reward. I suppose you'd have the same purists complaining that they don't want their current game based off of a future system (the system exists in partial form in Rift, and will apparently exist in partial form in TERA in a future update).

Only in SE's MMOs is "rare drop = difficult content" held as the gold standard by the so-called elite.

@Vadre: Congrats, you just described, in a nutshell, Rift's Rift system. Big bads spawn and break shit, everyone bands together, people who contribute the most (be it damage, healing, ect.) get the best shit from it. Hearing it from the mouth of the elites, though, that system wouldn't fly well in XIV, because the fun isn't in fighting strong monsters and seeing everyone gear up, but fighting easy monsters who are rare, and seeing only one's self or one's linkshell gear up.

Not everyone, but most people like shinyz regardless of how said shinyz are obtained. If that wasn't the case, people wouldn't have returned to a small circular room to button mash every half hour for 4+ years.
I love ya Wulf, but you are in the incredibly small minority. There are a lot of ways to implement content and long-term goals that don't require XI's world spawn crap.

This. I'd love to see something like XI trials for long-term goals. Something that rewards effort than luck.

Except it doesn't. Even in FFXI people botted Sandworm and Ixion, every LS I was ever in that did those two HNMs eventually made it a full-time LS event too. The window slowly moved out of our primetime but that's what EU and JP players were for (to keep track of the death time). Ixion/Sandworm mechanics solved absolutely none of the competition and regularity of spawns. You still knew the death time, so you knew the pop window, so you could reasonably camp it AND still bot it.

Something like Khimaira or Tiamat is probably a better example of spontaneity and less camping due to their long windows. Still though, you typically had a mule sit at the spawn point and watch and then when it did pop you raced out to claim. (Which was reasonably fun imo, esp the Khimaira run) Still if it got down to the wire you had people in full force and dropping from the sky to claim shit '~'

How childish! I hated the people only when competing against them in the Aery. I definitely enjoyed hating them in the Aery, and I definitely enjoyed shit talking people, but I don't know if I took any of it to heart enough to say they were my "enemies." Someone in XIV sent me a tell the other day asking me if I was from Bahamut etc, and then told me they were from an LS I hated. I remembered the LS name, and by far and large the only reason I remember any negative thing about the LS was the amount of drama threads on these very forums! CRASH OIL HITS NIDHOGG FOR 300 POINTS OF DAMAGE.

These were the sticking points of something like Fafnir's longevity. You would claim, let's say, without botting, what, once in ten days? Fuck, I never claimed a single HNM I can recall. (My LSes did, but not me personally.) Post-patch force spawn Fafnir has like a 20% Ridill drop rate, personally refusing to believe they adjusted it to be more common, that means you have a 1 in 5 chance for a sword every ten days. That sounds about right to me, one Ridill every two months.

That's just stupid. In that two months, about four other people maxed out Warrior and want the sword now. That's when you get the retarded LS Drama. I've wanted it longer! He's just a bandwagon WAR! etc.

If we're gonna do this sort of thing I hope the grind isn't as asinine as Magians. Weather conditions? Gross. I'd rather just get decent rewards from tedious Achievements. (Give me something cool if I finish Region d'Etre for example!)

Oh man I remember the debate with this.

Personally I wonder about the future of some jobs and classes. Going to feel odd having GLA branch off into a DD job and have Sentinel/Rampart/etc.

Yeah. If I recall correctly Yoshi said recently that he wanted to make DRK branch off of GLA but he wants the change to be permanent (as in can't go back to PLD).
